that group you refer to is actually NAR...New Apostolic Reformation
that group makes Charismatics akin to Lilliputians vs giants
Charismatics are old school compared to NAR which is so far outside the accepted realm of actual Christianity as to be in another galaxy
in fact, a galaxy far far away

It comes from not walking by the faith of Christ as kind of faith that which alone comes from hearing prophecy .
They show themselves as having no confidence of the unseen work of the Spirit that works in a believer to both will and do the good pleasure of God. So they rather seek after a sign to give themselves the false confidence. It is just another voice of the antichrist trying to persuade men to walk after the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh to develop a false pride .
And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil..Gen 3:4
Surely they did die in dying, doing the good pleasure of the voice of another. The lust of the eyes, instant gratification ( no faith)did its deceitful work . God did not want them to experience the wage of sin . He was hoping they would of rather of heard the voice of the unseen God and did what it said (believe God not seen) . Experience is not the valuator of spiritual unseen things of God .Prophecy ane is.
1Jo 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
No such thing as a sign and a wonder. Sign are for those who rebel against prophecy . the sign of those who do hear prophecy is a new heart a new desire to do the will of God as he does work in us to make it possible to believe.
