Are you still without understanding? Don't you understand that you become man and wife in the church, and you get married in the bedroom after. You don't get married in a church!!! At least I hope not, that would be awkward.
Hmm...

First, welcome to the forum.

Second... Well... I don't technically disagree with anything you say. But I do strongly, emphatically disagree with how you are saying it. The term "supercilious" tends to come to mind here.

i just investigated that. all states have abolished that rule. don't know when that occurred. that's odd to me. especially since covid, aids & venereal disease you would think even more that states should have the blood test rule.

Wow, I didn't know this. Seems odd to me too, I think a blood test is a good idea. My parents were required to get a blood test before they got married decades ago (I'm from Oklahoma). I've never been married, so I didn't know it had been abolished. Interesting. I have no plans to get married, so it doesn't affect me. It just seems wise for folks who do get married.

I will just leave this here.

1 Cor. 6:15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot? Certainly not! 16 Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? For “the two,” He says, “shall become one flesh.”

You get married in the bedroom!!!

Just speaking personally, if I were going to get married, the legalities of the marriage would have to be in place (meaning it's signed and official) before anything be happening in the bedroom.

And yet 1 cor 6 isn't about marriage. So maybe "becoming one flesh" isn't the same as marriage even in God's definition. Because sex = marriage has some pretty horrible implications and some major theological issues:

1) As Jesus says, the law of Moses permits divorce; meaning that even in God's perfect law marriages were a legal thing that could be legally undone.

2) What does that mean for children who are molested at a young age? Are they now married to their abuser with no recourse?

3) Two non-christian strangers who have a one night stand. Are they married to each other? How many marriages could an individual accumulate this way?

Or is it maybe that while sex has consequences for the whole person (even the spiritual dimensions) it isn't the same as marriage which involves vows and commitments (in some cultures explicit in some cultures more implicit expectations) to one another before witnesses and the recognition by the community that the two of you now "belong" to one another and are a single social unit.

To marry means to join together.
If two strangers have a one night stand where they become one flesh, they are married. If she was a virgin, widow or divorced because her husband committed adultery, she would be his concubine. A concubine is a woman that the man is "married" to that is not "his wife." As I pointed out, Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines. And, again, a concubine is a woman the man is "married" to that is not "his wife."

hmm I don't know if marriage covenant is exactly the same as fornication, there does need to be some kind of formal acknowledgement of it otherwise its living in sin and you aren't being honest.

A man can have many mistresses yes and a woman can be a mistress to a married or unmarried man, but it doesn't mean they are truly married and recognised as such.

As for sex=marriage I don't think it's the only thing as for sure people can have sex without it, and rape and such things happen.

When the bible talks about cleaving to his wife it is not about sex so much as they are being together at all times and living in close proximity --under the same roof as a couple and not with their parents. The 'one flesh' aspect of it isn't JUST the intercourse part.

The marital bed - the bed married couples share -- is not just a mattress on the floor or the random space where harlots do their business. Well I don't know never been a harlot of charged for my ahem services.

But if you want to justify it by saying whoever is having sex with whoever is married then ok whatever. I mean there is same-sex marriage nowadays so 🤷‍♀️ what makes them different from just sleeping around?

Sex does not equal marriage.
One can look into scripture, when sex happens outside of marriage, it is called immorality, fornication, it does not marry 2 people together.

Though in marriage, sex is a blessing within that.

Soooooo... You make up private definitions for words.

Whatever works for you, but it will very much hinder communication with other people. Just so you know.

I am going to only approach this one last time and then I will be quiet.

Gen 2:24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
What does "be joined to his wife" mean?
If marriage=wedding happens in the church, how does that make a couple "one flesh?"

Mat 19:3 The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?” 4 And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ 5 and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? 6 So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”

7 They said to Him, “Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?”
8 He said to them, “Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. 9 And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery.”
If by definition marriage=wedding, then how is marrying another person adultery? (Def. Adultery : voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and someone other than that person's current spouse (Mirriam-Webster))

1 Cor 6:15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot? Certainly not! 16 Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? For “the two,” He says, “shall become one flesh.”
Used to illustrate "joined to" and "one flesh (body).

I rest.

the engagement/ wedding ring - is a symbol of this union
I.e joining, being tied together, hand in hand.

Joining and knowing (in Biblical sense) is a slightly different. Eg Mary was betrothed to Joseph but didn't know him yet.

Joining a harlot does not mean marrying them.
Marriage is a whole lot more than just physically joining someone.

Wedding (the ceremony) is not the same as a marriage.
You can also get married at the courthouse or any other venue with a celebrant and at least one other witness.

I think it is obvious why this is done. Also for children/property purposes.
Plus looking at the traditions and customs of Jewish weddings and marriages that come from the Bible, there are specific requirements. Men were also allowed more than one wife, but they had to live with them, and look after them as well (feed and clothe them) and provide for their children for the rest of their lives etc.

It's WAY more than just the intercourse part.

Hope you can rest on that one! lol

I guess when someone says 'why don't I join you' they are meaning a lot more than is intended for Dogden lol

So..can we ask how many wives has he got? Does he provide for them?

totally correct!
A lot of people often say 'marriage is just a piece of paper'

But it's a very important piece of paper!! For legal purposes and as evidence that you are truly married at a time and date with a witness.

Divorce papers are important too.

I think if you just winging it you'd know if you were truly married or not, though nobody else may believe you. Oh this is just my bf/gf we're not married. We're just friends. Ok ....whatever!

Yes, marriage wedding first, wedding means covenant. Then intimacy.
Intimacy itself does not mean marriage. In ot, that's call adultery, could be stoned.
What does "be joined to his wife" mean?
If marriage=wedding happens in the church, how does that make a couple "one flesh?"
Marriage duty is for them to join together. Fulfill the duty.
If special occasion, the duty can be delayed. Mary and Joseph married then a year later, they fulfill that duty.
Correct. Marrying another in this case is adultery.
If by definition marriage=wedding, then how is marrying another person adultery?
Even no intimacy, the fact of marriage in this case is already adultery, because one broke the covenant, adultery against former spouse, as well as God.
(Def. Adultery : voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and someone other than that person's current spouse (Mirriam-Webster))
Biblical speaking, any sex outside of marriage is adultery.
1 Cor 6:15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot?
Exactly, unless in marriage, sex will be called harlot.... fornication.
Certainly not! 16 Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? For “the two,” He says, “shall become one flesh.”
Used to illustrate "joined to" and "one flesh (body).
Scripture us telling believers stay away from immorality.

Fornication is not the same as marriage for the same reason that poop with chocolate syrup is not the same as a brownie. There's chocolate in both, but all the other ingredients are different. There's sex in both, but all the other ingredients are different.

And what of a couple for whom physical sex is impossible? Are they not really married?
