Ummm....you are correct.
Nobody is a Saint in war.
That doesn't mean that their abilities or tactics are not admirable. Each of these Confederate Generals were unique in the tactics they invented and used. They were extremely talented men in many ways.

The North would have lost the war if it was all about talented military leadership. Because the South had much more.

What the South did not have was competent political leadership. And that is the ONLY reason why the South lost....

It definitely wasn't superior moral high ground. (Morality was much worse from the north and continued to be decades afterwards).

Today as our political realm loses all competency except for figuring out how to stuff their pockets with wealth....(just like then)

I can't see things getting better anytime soon.

In American colleges they told me that the North won because it had better tech and industry.
What are your thoughts on this?

Nope....
Absolutely crap. Yes, better industrialization and tech....but still not enough of the New tech was on the battlefield. Brass casings were not easily had. South had superior numbers and training and home field advantages.
That's the foremost reason the war lasted as long as it did. The first battle was thought to become a joke and the North would win easily. It was a massacre of Northern troops almost immediately.

What got the South in trouble was the embargoes and lack of shipping. Lack of ports as well. If the Southern politicians had done anything about the shipping in and out of goods...whole nudder cridder would have been the outcome.

The American Civil War was not fought over slavery. It was fought over secession and states rights. Lincoln had anti-slavery beliefs, but his motive for feeing the slaves was to keep England from entering the war against the Union. England wanted the cotton for their mills and appeared willing to break the blockade to get it. Almost none of the men who actually fought the war owned slaves. People in the north were largely indifferent on the issue as the northern economy did not support holding slaves. Th monuments were not created to support slavery. That is a politically contrived myth.
Jesuits had a hand in things also.

Yep, states rights to own slaves and put them to forced labor. If slavery had nothing to do with it, why did the Confederacy enshrine it in their Constitution? The idea that the Civil War wasn't about slavery is the contrived myth. I'm sure all those guys in those monuments believed they were very heroic, but at the end of the day they were fighting so they could hold onto their slaves and the gravy train.

I did not say slavery was not an issue. I am saying slavery alone would not have caused the war. Frankly, most people didn't care. Have you read how the North treated slaves during and after the war? Read the story of Union General Jefferson C. Davis (not Jefferson Davis the politician) and the incident at Abernathy Creek outside of Savanna and then convince me the north were sympathetic to slaves. Or read the story of the Union Colonel (can't recall his name right now maybe Lungren), who hung a negro slave child in a tree and left him hang there as a warning. If we tear down southern statutes we need to tear many in the north too.

Hi friend, found this and wanted to share, The Civil War series by Ken Burns had a nice part about Lincoln's view describing the truth you shared.

My understanding of the Civil War, in part, is simple and pragmatic; Lincoln declared ass slaves free in order to generate insurrection in the south, weakenining the strength os the south inorder have a quicker victory for the north.

You clearly didn't watch the video I posted in post #19 or read what I wrote. Do that and then tell me slavery wasn't the cause of the war. The northerners weren't perfect, but they did something about their sins rather than rewrite the Constitution to suit themselves.

Can you summarize what the video says in your own words?
Doubt it.

The North, through millions of economic development in Government grants, had a lot of machinery and production plants. The South got nothing by comparison. No new Docks and Ports. No railroads or steel plants.

Then the oppression started in earnest. The Southern states were forced to sell their agricultural products to the north. Severely discounted prices too. Because the North was over developed and Europe began its own industrialization...driving the prices for manufactured goods down. The prices for raw goods remained stable but the Southern farmers saw none of it.

The Northern businessmen were making Godfather type deals that Southern Farmers were not allowed to not participate in.
Driving Southern farmers to cut farming costs by any means necessary....meaning slaves shipped to them and sold to them by Northeners.

Where yes, Southern Farmers did use slaves the North had essentially enslaved the whole of the Southern states with economics.

The abolishing of slavery....a locus point but missing the larger issue at hand. The North did not use chains but the slavery was very much in force.
And the northern factories were also fond of child laborers as well. More economic slaves deprived of childhoods and education by their need for food, shelter, and clothing.

This right here is the reason for the war....Slavery of black people should have been solved in any other way other than how it was solved. The Economic slavery of everyone should have been stopped. It did nobody any favors anywhere.

Dirty little secret is that MANY Southern blacks did fight FOR THE SOUTH willingly. Because Northern troops killed everyone. Not just white people but black people too, women and children. They look did not leave plantations when freed....there was literally nowhere for them to go. Their families needed protection.

"But not to be tedious in enumerating the numerous changes for the better, allow me to allude to one other though last, not least. The new constitution has put at rest, forever, all the agitating questions relating to our peculiar institution African slavery as it exists amongst us the proper status of the negro in our form of civilization. This was the immediate cause of the late rupture and present revolution. Jefferson in his forecast, had anticipated this, as the 'rock upon which the old Union would split.' He was right."—Alexander Stephens, Confederate Vice President, Georgia, 1861

So the vice president of the Confederacy said slavery was the cause of the rupture and present revolution. He said Jefferson was right when he said slavery would be the rock upon which the Union would split. But slavery couldn't possibly have been the cause of the Civil War. I rest my case.

The North caused the slavery in the South and the Federal Government insured that the South used slaves...

The whole concept of economic slavery is still not understood by the masses. But the chains of economic slavery are much more binding and secure than any steel chains could ever be.

The lack of investment in the infrastructure, farming equipment, and industrialization of the Southern States is what caused the cascade of errors and problems on both sides.

In truth....poorly represented people was the ultimate cause. The Southern Senators and congressmen did their constituents a poor service by not getting the industrial plants and equipment....or investment in farming machinery research. Or railroads or ports. The monopoly of ships, shipping, and shipyards in the North also was a huge contributing factor.

The North constantly begging the Government for federal dollars to build more plants and infrastructure also was a huge problem. While coal and goods were shipped by rail in the North the South was still using barges and mules. That right there should be the huge red flag.

Couple of questions.

Where did the Underground Railroad end? Indiana, Ohio, New York? Nope! Its northern terminus was Canada. The north states concern for the slaves was only to keep them out.

Have you heard of the so called "Black Codes" enacted after the war? These were enacted in many northern states including my own beloved Indiana. These laws were designed to prevent former slaves from settling. They prohibited black refugees from the south stopping anywhere in the state and required them to keep moving through. They made it illegal for more than two blacks from meeting together and some outlawed them from buying and selling. They could not own firearms, worship together, vote, own property or attend public school. In some instances they were forced into involuntary labor for committing even minor offenses.

The myth that the north fought the war to end slavery does not hold up to historic review.

Yeah those poor southern millionaires. They sure had it rough.

That may not have been the reason in the beginning, but that's how it ended. For Lincoln, the main objective was keeping the union together. The south wanted to own other human beings and didn't want anyone telling them otherwise, so they seceded. Lincoln could've given in and said okay, it's not worth fighting over, let every state own other human beings if that's what they want. But in the end he did the right thing and fought to end slavery.

I don’t think anybody is talking to the troll anymore so the troll has been out-trolled since the convo isn’t directed at the troll anymore but the subject.
