Deleting our own posts ?

First I want to thank 1Still_Waters for his help in what
could have been a serious situation for me.
I have all day been trying to get 2 posts removed from
a forum and I can't get response from moderators. So,
it appears I am stuck.
I did ask 1 Still_Waters to suggest what to do, and true
to his calling he let me know this is why they do not like
to delete mistakes made, because one lead to another.
I understand where he is coming from.
My question is why can't we be given a 12 -24 hour range
and delete our own posts ? Even after we post we can't
get back in after 5 mins. I had to report myself today
to the CC and ask for help, but no one would . I ran
across 1 Still_Waters and saw he was the man I should
see. Again I thank him for helping me out of a situation
that was badly needed for my personal account.
Has anyone any answers and can it be made to where we
are given a chance to delete our own posts ? Or at the
least give us more than 5 mins to edit ? What is that
all about anyway ? Does anyone have answers ? I
am going to bed...

This has been covered numerous times here. The time restrictions on editing is, for one, to prevent trolls from posting inappropriate things, then removing them making it harder to catch them. Also, it (and also a reason for not being able to delete a post after 5 minutes) is that others will post in response. And that will throw off the entire thread.

Also Mods and Admins are volunteers, therefore there is no guarantee that any will be on at any one time. They do not have a schedule to ensure 24/7 monitoring. Also Mods have less powers than Admins, though i'm not sure where the exact distinctions lie. So you cannot expect immediate responses to any request made. Sometimes you might, other times it may take hours. The key is to make sure that what you type and post you are confident you want.

The ability to edit/delete posts in a longer term also risks ruining the flow of a thread. People respond to you, then you edit your post and their response no longer makes sense. This happens 10 times in one thread and soon the whole thread is off.

This site has been up, i believe roughly 14 years. Their decisions to put certain restrictions on what we can and cannot do and within what time frames i'm sure has not come lightly, but rather through trial and error and finding what is ideal for the needs of maintaining the integrity of the site.

So far, my understanding is no post is eligible for mods to alter except in case of breaking the rules, or giving too much personal information out.
 
The reason that the user edit time is short is that

A) Once several posts are made after a specific post, deleting it can seriously mess with the context of the thread

B) People have been known to make inflammatory posts then delete them after the thread has gone hog wild and the end result is that invariably someone who is reacting to the inflammatory post looks like the bad guy


You claim that you reported the post to get help and that no one would. Please understand that most of the staff on CC are volunteers that have full time jobs and lives outside of this site. I can't speak for the rest of the staff, but I usually check the reported posts first thing in the morning before I leave for work and within a few minutes of arriving home from work in the evening. I edited out the e-mail info at the top of your post as soon as I saw the report, I just failed to notice the Facebook links at the bottom.
 
Understand completely. Coming from another Christian Org. Site we did
have control to remove our post, and yes, it did mess up thread. I was
however able to close up entire Thread I started so there was no trail
left to make people wonder why it looked odd. However, that was not
the case all the time. I truly understand and thank you for comments.

My need for administrator was due to IAMS sending me email, and I
thought 'wow' I will let people know I did contact them and brought
it over to the topic at hand. But, to my horror, I did not know a link
to one of my Email home page was on it and it took me directly to the
my sign in page. I am grateful for his help. And he put me in my place
when I asked for help on another issue, that being.. posting something
I wish I had not. So Moderators and Administrators God bless you for
all you do. I realize all over the world covers a lot of territory. Blessings.
