Judge not, that you be not judged. Matthew 7:1
Hello MsMediator, the context of the passage is clear (see v3-5 below), so I agree with you, that the Lord is speaking specifically about hypocritical judgments here (or judgmentalism), not judging or discernment in general, especially for Christians when the reason for judging another person is meant as a blessing/for their good.I believe focus of this verse is not to be hypocrites. You can judge and determine right vs wrong, but also recognize that you are also sinful.
Hello Solitude, I'm a bit confused about your poll's two questions, especially since you posted all of John 7:24 in the title of the threadJudge not, that you be not judged. Matthew 7:1
Here’s an example of judging by appearanceJudge not, that you be not judged. Matthew 7:1

Then there is v6, where the Lord commands us to judge others in regard to sharing the Gospel and/or His word with them. So, unless He forgot what He said just 5 verses earlier, Matthew 7:1's "do not judge" must not be understood as a general or universal command about judging others.
God bless you!!
~Deuteronomy (David)
Matthew 71 Do not judge so that you will not be judged. 2 For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you. 3 Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ and behold, the log is in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye. 6 Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces. .

The prophecy of IsaiahHere’s an example of judging by appearance
“For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; and ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool: are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?
Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?”
James 2:2-5
we really need to be careful about the judgements we make about others
Because we all must do this
“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or evil.”
2 Corinthians 5:10 KJV
Because that’s true …We all need to believe and trust in this person ne of the gospels core doctrines
“Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall be given into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.”
Luke 6:36-38 KJV
other words if we arent merciful to others who sin against us we shouldn’t expect anything but this come that day we stand before the lord for judgement
“For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.”
James 2:13
a lot of people just reject that they have to be judged all together this never gets through because they’ve been told other things
“But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, And every tongue shall confess to God. So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God. Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother's way.”
Romans 14:10-13 KJV
ashen we stand before him laid bare and can’t hide anything we’ve said or done …… we can have mercy and forgivness and no condemnation or we can have judgement without mercy based judgment on what the gospel teaches believers
Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgivenwith the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.”
Many just refuse to accept this part
“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.”
2 Corinthians 5:10 KJV
and so all the rest goes away for them and they can remain in that box and never needto acknowledge the truth and how mercy taught in the gospel can mediate and reconcile thier imperfect deeds . It’s sad really how wrong ideas planted can subvert the word of God in minds

The Bible addresses the ability to discern between right and wrong in many verses. Here are some key ones about discerning right from wrong:
The Bible teaches that discerning right and wrong requires wisdom that comes from God through His Spirit, practice, love, and reliance on His Word rather than human judgment alone. It warns against dullness of heart or rejection of knowledge, which leads to the inability to judge rightly.
- 1 Kings 3:9 – Solomon asks God for "an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil".
- Hebrews 5:14 – The mature have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.
- Philippians 1:9-10 – Paul prays that believers may have love abounding in knowledge and discernment, so they may approve what is excellent.
- Romans 12:2 – Don't conform to the world, but be transformed by renewing your mind so you can discern God's will, what is good and acceptable.
- John 7:24 – "Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment".
- James 1:5 – Ask God for wisdom, who gives generously, so one can discern right from wrong.
- 1 Corinthians 2:14 – Spiritual discernment comes from the Spirit of God, enabling understanding of spiritual truths.
- Psalm 111:10 – The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; good understanding comes from obeying His commandments.
- Proverbs 3:5-6 – Trust in the Lord rather than leaning on your own understanding to make the paths straight, i.e., to choose rightly.
This guidance applies broadly to making moral decisions in life and distinguishing spiritual truth. God bless you, Brother.
