Hey everyone,

One of the things I'm trying to work on in myself is frequently slipping in the language department when I'm particularly frustrated. We have a new, supposedly updated computer at work and it's locked up so many times that the other day, I heard a co-worker erupt into a series of words I've never heard her say in the 8 years I've worked with her. Unfortunately, I'm ten times as guilty.

My office manager and I had briefly talked about setting up a "Stop Swearing Jar" in the office, with participants throwing in a quarter for every questionable word that was uttered.

I know people have differing views, but I was raised in a house in which we could never say things like "Gosh, or "Gee", because to my Mom, it was too close to the Lord's name.

I found that over the years, I developed my own "clean" swear words such as, "Drat!" (something I was teased about mercilessly in grade school), "Ship!! Of Fools!!", and for some reason, "Rat's Butt!!" is a frequent favorite. The other day, my office manager said, "OMG!!!" to which I replied, "Oh, you mean, 'Oh My Granola?!'"

I know it probably doesn't seem like a big deal and I know it pertains to all people, not just singles... but as time passes I'm continuously more aware of my actions and how it may affect other people (for example... what kind of language am I using when I'm around my friends' kids?!)

What about you? What do you do in order to stop yourself from using offensive words? Do you just not say anything at all? Do you go ahead and swear but tell yourself you'll do better next time? Or do you make up your own set of "swear words" to get you through those times of extreme frustration?

After thinking a minute I realized I say mild swear words a lot. And sometimes made up silly ones, like fudgebucket...or ones that look too close to the real thing to say here. But I use the bad ones very sparingly.

When you swear too much it takes away the emphasis by the time an emergency situation arises when it's actually ok to swear. :p

And I never use Gods name in any of the swear words.

In my opinion there are only 3 cuss words which exist:
-- taking the LORD's (God) name in vain
-- taking the Lord's (Jesus) in vain
-- a certain four letter word that starts with an 'f'.

All other words are just slang for another.... more acceptable word. However, my views do not represent the majority, so I understand that people will disagree with me.

I do not use any language that might cause me to offend a brother or sister in Christ or even an unbeliever. So I keep these words commonly frowned upon by Christians and some non-Christians under my tongue.

The f-bomb was a word I frequently used before I was saved, since the renewal of my mind I was convicted to quit using that word, so I have. In my eyes what makes that word derogative is that it's commonly used to express the act of sexual intercourse and usually represents fornication or sex outside of marraige.

I have no doubt that God is much more concerned with what people are saying in whole; the message they are giving, than the individual words they are using to express themselves. However words that don't edify or ones that are used to tear somebody down can be considered curse words.

My final thoughts on this are that it is not the words that you use it is the context that you use them in, and using anyword in a derogative fashion against somebody else can be considered cursing.

Lol yip I make up swear words all the time. A huge amount of my vocabulary before I became a Christian was swearing, a serious amount of it, so sometimes they slip out without me meaning it. And I cant really think of any of my made up ones right now... lol its usually just nonsense words.

When I came back to the Lord, my extremely colorful vocab was one of the main things that needed work. :)

I kinda slipped this morning and I'm probably in trouble with my sister in law cos I think my nephew heard it. I was on the phone re: a work matter and I told someone I worked with that I would take care of the situation if I had to rip the other person's head off and p*** down his neck (a colorful phrase I learned from my dad).

Normally, rather than using certain words, I will make noises like grunts, groans, arggghs or the occasional primal scream :D

If I hear somebody taking God's or Jesus Christ's names in vain I cringe. I used to not say anything, but I am living more boldly for God now than I ever have so the spirit in me would not let me hesitate to point out that sort of error.

A weird thing is, if my friends or someone swear when talking to me in real life, I don't mind or at least it doesn't annoy me, but if someone on tv or a movie swears or takes Gods name in vain, it really makes me annoyed and sort of cringe.

I noticed that I totally changed my opinion by the end of my post here. I had a bit of a revelation while writing that. It is too late to go back and change the beginning now...

hahah this amused me for some reason

I've done that before, but rarely that quickly, McCharming. :) Too many voices in your head?

I go back from time to time and read my posts and it's like..what was I thinking???? Can't delete 'em. :/

I am pretty sure that I only have two voices in my head 8s lol. I don't regret it, but I am sure a few people will read it all the while scratching their heads in confusion. I had a hard time putting what I wanted to say in words.

Yes I swear, every day my husband tells me. If someone gives me a huge fright or REALLY surprises me or (heck should I say this?) if Im intimate with my husband and hes doing a fantastic job - yeah I swear.

My most frequent 'swearword' is rats. I kinda say it when I really annoyed at it or I remember something I should have done. It started as a substitute for cr*p and sh*t. Here in New Zealand we have a native language and most know basic words and such, my favorite being whaka rongo mai! Which means shut up and listen.

Yes I do intend to improve on it before I have children. I babysit my 3 year old cousin a lot and I do my best to have self control around him. Hes already learnt the word 'bugger" which he learnt from his mom, grandma and granpa (not me! lol).

I dunno what these are, but instead of swearing i've been saying these things for years

When im frustrated i usually yell WHAT THE HECK!!! IM GONNA PUNCH MYSELF IN THE FREAKIN FACE!!!! Or at whatever im frustrated with that wont work..I HAAATE YOU!!!
if i hurt myself.. again with the yelling its something along the lines of MOTHER FLIPPER PIECE OF CRAP!!!!
If im mad i yell FLIPPIN FLAPPIN CRIPPIN CRAPPIN!!!!

I dunno, Nod... It sounds like you've actually got your own entire language goin' there... ("Do you speak Nod-own-ian?!") :D

Only two things I consider "sinful"

- Lord's name in vain. "Geez" not included.
- profanity(a show of disrespect, or a desecration or debasement of someone)

Otherwise, I don't have a problem with them. I primarily use them as an expletive, although occasionally I'll also use them simply as an exclamation. Either way, it's all in how you use them. As far as I'm concerned they are no worse than any "replacement" word.

You can be profane with someone without using so called "swear" words. It's all about your intentions/mindset.

Generally I only swear when when I'm stuck between a "rock and hard place." It bothers me when people swear liberally for no apparent reason.

I also think it's more about the context than the word itself. So I agree with some of you who have already posted.
That said, I don't cuss in front of anyone ever. I have said things to myself though..in my own head. I try not to do that either though because I feel like it's a poor way to deal with any anger or frustration...or that I should have more self control.

Just to give examples of the context thing: The word "pisseth" appears more than once in the KJV Bible. The word "bastard" is also in there. So is "damned". They are all used in what is an accepted context there, but I'm sure we've all heard them used in other ways.

You're blessed. I have a whole bunch and they argue a lot :)

Thanks :) I'm going to save those "pisseth" verses for when my sister in law calls to ask where her son learned that colorful phrase :D
