I plan to buy an e-bike soon to ride back and forth to work
2 miles to work and they will do about 20 miles an hour
yes, one of our daughter has one. here in the 'People's Republic of New York' they may only be used on roads that have a 30 mph speed limit. it kinda limits what she can do with it, but she used it nearly every day last summer to go back and forth to a little local beach.

is it like a mobility scooter?
Here the postpeople use them like little golf carts.

Tnere's also electric scooters you can use with an app. But Ive never ridden one. They get abandoned in random places. In my city its pretty hilly and sprawling. Its built on volcanos, so not the best geography for cycling.

I can't find a local place that sells electric bikes. I like to buy my Grandson-in-law one so I don't have to take him to and from work when his car is broke down (a frequent occurrence). It's about four miles to his work.

As for the availability of electric cars here. They must be ordered from your dealer. My neighbor ordered an electric pick up truck back in June. He is still waiting. His estimated delivery date is now February of next year.

If you start with a normal bike and put electric motors on both wheels, it can get a lot faster than 20 mph.

You can take the DIY as far as making your own battery pack out of battery cells and a battery management system... Or you can just use a 56 volt ego lawn mower battery pack.

or, you could just do what my 9 year old told the person who nearly ran him over with an electric bike to do and
"USE THE LEGS GOD GAVE YOU AND PEDDLE!"

Yes, that's what I do. I have three racing bikes... I don't race, but I have put many miles on them. It's 14 miles to my job, 28 round trip, so some weeks I've put 140 miles on my legs.

But some people are not quite up to that.

If you insist people peddle instead of using electric bikes, I'm gonna start yelling "Get a horse!" every time you get in your car. :p

To which you will probably get a sly comment about having hundreds of them in the car... ;)

I think it's to sound cool?
Same with guys that rev their car engines. They're just looking for attention.

But try filling the gas tank on an electric bike in less than two minutes. You gonna have a bit of a wait before you can head on down the road.

Exactly, and lots of pedal power in an electric bike.

hi, Billy :)

our daughter had to order her e-bike online. it came in a box and she assembled it herself. i had thought her dad would have to do it (and he did tighten a few connections), but she's a very determined young lady.

i'm sure your grandson-in-law would be able to put it together, if you can find one.
fond regards to Mama. :)

i don't know if this is a standard feature, but our daughter's bike does have pedals.
she normally uses them, but we live at the base of a mountain range so when the kills are steep she has help.

does anyone know if they're all like that?

I want to buy the one that has pedal assist so you can hit the throttle and pedal as much or as little as you want to. Handy for going up hills or when the wind is working against you

Heh. I grew up in east Tennessee, riding a ten speed that was stuck in the highest gear. East Tennessee is where all the real hills are. (West TN don't know nothin bout no hills.) I would have killed... Well, I would have seriously injured at least, for some electric assistance.

I've always preferred cruiser bikes because for a few reasons
They have a foot break which I like better? Hand brakes don't work as well when they get wet and if they ever get out of line, no matter how much you tinker with them, you can never get them quite right again
Switching all those gears is a pain in the rump and eventually your gears will start slipping

My gears been slipping for a loooooong time anyway.

But I CAN get those brakes and gears just right so they don't slip... except when it gets wet. Nothing you can do about rim brakes when it gets wet. Everything else I can fix with a pocket multitool.

A friend bought an e-bike but she had to go a fair way (in a car) to collect it lol

She got a staff discount and encouraged me to check it out but I said nope still way too expensive and plus I still had to drive there to get it serviced when its not local.

I expect if they come down in price more peeps would have them ALSO if cycleways were safer but at present you pretty much risking your life riding on the road on an e-bike or any bike.

she loves horses and thinks all cars should be forbidden and go back to horse/buggy days ( she's little and doesn't see the flaws in that)
it should be noted that when my son
said that we were on a walking/bike trail that had several postings "NO MOTOR/ELECTRIC BIKES"
