without derailing this thread too much I just wanted to point out what I've seen on this and why I think you are asking the impossible.
The core issue is language, not attitude or lack of love or concern. Language provides many areas of ambiguity. It isn't a matter of hardening your heart, but rather of ackowledging that there is ambiguity and seeking to understand. the english language, language in general can't be fixed here on these forums.
When words have different meanings; when words have different associations for each person, it is simply impossible to avoid.
The best we can do is what, I believe, you called becoming desensitize; what I would call being slow to judge. If I wasn't on my phone I'd lookup a proverb, but guess my own words will have to suffice!![]()
