So it is ok to fast , my understanding was you did not eat at ALL . And how do you know God will lead you to fast ??
Your understanding is correct. If one looks at the examples of scripture, those fasting neither ate nor drank...
Ezr 10:6 Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib; and when he came there, he ate no bread and drank no water, for he mourned because of the guilt of those from the captivity.
Est 4:15 Then Esther told them to reply to Mordecai:

We choose to fast to draw close to God. A wise man once told me that we do not fast to get God to see things our way, we fast to see things God's way...
