Well, I do not know anything about fasting for weight loss. However, spiritually it depends. Sometimes God may speak to you concerning how many days you should fast. And, to understand fasting you should read Isaiah 58. It will help you understand the kind of fasting that God likes, dislikes, and benefits.

Don't eat food for a day and drink a lot of water. The benefit I get is that I can now drink coffee without diarrhea.

I fast when I want to pray for something or someone. The longest i ever fasted was seven days. No food. No water. I was praying for the revival that was going on in our town. We have a group of women that fast and pray together for things somtimes but that was the longest. The revival was a week long, we just wanted and prayed Gods will be done in the hearts of the workers and the hearts of our community.

I know fasting isnt about weight loss. It is about taking control over our flesh and refusing it what it desires. Thats kind of what started all this trouble in the first place right? God said do not eat, and they ate it anyway. When i fast, and i have actually just finished a three day fast yesterday, I generally have a goal or person in mine. I pray about all sorts of things during. and I do something I think God taught me, i call it hanging around with Jesus. Years ago I read something about praying prostrate. I thought i should. when i started i put my body on the floor with my arms and lets positioned like an H. I thought thats what it meant. while I prayed that way the first time, God said, cross your ankles. I did that. Then he said spread your arms open. I did that. He then said, this is what prostrate means. Then i realized, I was laying on the floor but, I was positioned like i was on the back of the cross with Jesus. My mouth would be behind his ears. He was on the front, i was on the back. Ever since then I have called it hanging out with Jesus. Jesus challenged me. He said i was on that cross seven hours. Will you stay with me that long. I dont know if any of u ever tried to pray that way but it hurts. It took me several years before i could even stay there four hours without giving in to my flesh. It seems easy, you are just laying down. But if you act like you have spikes through your wrists into the floor, and through your ankles into the floor, you can move your head side to side some, and you can move your hands some, but its just not very easy. When I do get up after five hours, thats as far as i have gotten, I can barely move. I usually vomit a few times trying to stay there. somtimes i say this song from revelation, holy holy holy Lord God Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come. over and over. Generally when i do get up, its very hard to move. I have to drag myself to sitting, and eventually after sitting awhile, somtimes as much as an hour, i feel strong enough to stand.

During this past fast it was about a friends husband who has cancer. I asked God to keep help me not to eat until his cancer was gone. Somtimes i do what is a full fast, no food no water, somtimes its a food fast only. After three days, I knew i was finished. I wish i could lose some weight i am probably fifty pounds over weight. Only time i did was during that revival, lost ten pounds and when i stopped fasting it came right back on. I think that was water weight. I was dehydrated.

it doesn't matter on an open forum when 'Threads for different reason are posted' or re-posted,
about 'FASTING, as 'new people' are always joining and seeking wisdom/help/guidance from others...

FASTING is often an heartfelt personal choice of obediance and 'often' an 'order' from our Saviour for His Holy reasons...

I have fasted up to ten days on water several times and lost ten kilo's but saw it coming back on in days lol. These days people are so toxic that longer than three days can be dangerous for some as so much gets released. For those that are depleted and have adrenal fatigue and can't get through a day without stimulants like coffee, chocolate or energy drinks its not a good idea. Better do some intermittent fasting like eat 6 hours and fast 18 hours a day.

If you are fasting for weight loss, I recommend intermittent fasting. Skip either breaskfast or dinner. Dinner is my peronal preference. It helps with weight loss but it still takes discipline.

Water fasting for purifying the body is rough. I was eating relatively healthily beforehand. I did it for almost 5 days. I lost a little weight but what was better to me was that I got more control over my blood sugar.

Fasting spiritually, I am fairly new to that. I just completed one. On day one, I didn't gain any new insight. On day 2, I did. On the issue I was praying about and lots on things that were on my heart. I recommend this type of fast and end it in prayer.

Its to humble our souls
Psalm 69:10

When I wept and humbled my soul with fasting, it became my reproach.

Isaiah 58:5-6
"Is it a fast like this which I choose, a day for a man to humble himself? Is it for bowing one's head like a reed And for spreading out sackcloth and ashes as a bed? Will you call this a fast, even an acceptable day to the LORD? 6"Is this not the fast which I choose, To loosen the bonds of wickedness, To undo the bands of the yoke, And to let the oppressed go free And break every yoke?...
..

Its also a Telegram to put things before the Lords throne
Ezra 8:23

So we fasted and implored our God for this, and he listened to our entreaty.
..
Disciplining your body

1 Corinthians 9:27

But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.
..
And for spiritual deliverance...
Mark 9:29
And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.

And Jesus said when you fast..not if you fast

Matthew 6:16

“And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.

very true and very wise - a drug is a drug is a drug, the spots don't change, only we can do this
if we truly appreciate the precious gift of the vessel that Jesus has blessed us with...

Wonderful responses. Thank you all. There is a GREAT REASON why God wants us to fast.. to get more closer to him, to lean on him and not our flesh.. to strengthen our spirits.. It's also healing and it helps detox all the bad in our body from toxins and eating unhealthy food in such. I remember fasting for just two days and praying and seeing how fast God answered my prayers. God teaches us to fast and pray for a reason. May all you be blessed. Always

This is something that is biblical and many of God's people use to do it in order to get close to God but scientifically there is so many health benefits as long as you can control the temptation to over eat latter and practice portion control. Something I think I struggle with sometimes. :)

Wish you well in practicing this. At the moment what I do alot is restrict the # of meals I have depending on physical work activity. As much of my work is PC based I will normally have 2 meals a day instead of 3 (no snack inbetween) and feel much better for it.

I am also trying to move to a more plant based diet. There is a lot of science that suppports this type of diet now days.

Is anyone currently fasting? I'm seeking fasting friends. I'm basically the only Christian amongst my friends and I want more Christian friends.

we have learned by now, to 'fast' when The Holy Spirit leads us, and not for our own
personal reasons - it's taken quite awhile for us to discern the difference,..
but we can definitely see that our reasons are becoming one' with our Heavenly Father's...
