Yes really!

I knew how much she was in Kilograms..so I converted it online using an online mass converter. I don't know how accurate those convertors are.. but yes, she was very very large. 200ish kgs in the metric system we use here. Basic mathematics tells me there is 2lb to one kilo, so 400lbs.

Oh my! See chart below, unless she's 8' tall, I think you were being too generous in your description of her. Not to hijack, but I really struggle to interact with people like that just in general. :S :(

HAHA! I was trying to be polite! No she was definitely not 8ft tall. I'm 6ft tall, and she certainly wasn't taller than me, let alone the same height as me :P

Yeah, I didn't answer "awkward", but I think I just probably haven't been around enough people fishing for compliments to get to that point. With most people I think I can find at least a few features that I can compliment them on. If not, I try to use humour, but that can backfire and just make things awkward.
 
Ok, after reading most of this thread I realize that no one has ever fished for compliments from me. I guess they only want compliments from cool people. Or maybe I'm the one doing the fishing. Hmmm..

Nah, I can't believe that. I'm sure that you're flooded with compliments; I mean you're so cool, you wear sunglasses at night! You probably just intimidate people so much that they don't even bother trying to fish you for compliments. :)
 
Well, I try to be cool but in the end I always fail. I'm really just an extreme introvert who dreams of being an extrovert.

It's VERY awkward , that's why I usually pretend I don't get their hint so I don't have to say anything.:) In general, I think it's a confidence issue but it could be that they are just vain...but I think that vanity usually comes from a confidence issue as well.

Girls are the worst when it comes to this stuff, but some boys do it, too. They'll talk about how they aren't good enough to have a girlfriend for whatever reason and girls will be like, "Oh no! You're totally good enough! Everything about you is amazing!"

It's preying on people's empathy and compassion and I have very little tolerance for it, personally. I refuse to play along. Playing along just enables that kind of behavior and thinking.

Yes I agree 100% that that is the classic example for compliment fishing. And its SOOOO annoying!!

I voted that I do technically fish for compliments but only with my husband and I don't do it all the time. I NEVER say "does my bum look fat in this?" but I do say "Do you like what Im wearing/Do I look pretty?" And he usually replies with "Smokin hot babe!" And I can't help but love that response lol.

Giving and receiving compliments is OK, after all it can build self esteem. giving one a sense of affirmation. I personally would like to give compliments when it is totally unexpected.

Fishing for compliments however is REALLY awkward. Worse, seeing someone obviously fishing for compliments makes it WAYYYYY awkward. (enter major eyerolling icon here) (I think to myself, "So, you want me to compliment you? you have to tell me, cause I don't get your hint...you need to be more subtle" *cough*)

I wonder though, if a girl or a guy makes an effort to look presentable, like in a date or something, is it the same as fishing for a compliment, after all you made the effort to look nice... And if the guy or girl fails to see or even comment on how you tried to clean up real nice, it can be a bummer moment...*thinks*
 
I've been thinking about this a little bit and maybe it's a little different if you are fishing for a compliment from your man because, after all, most of us DO go to a lot of extra trouble to look as good as we can for them, don't we? If they want us to do that and appreciate our efforts, I don't think there's anything wrong with them expressing that...and ...guys will be guys and forget...so...a little nudge now and again can't be too bad, can it? :) Or can it?? haha

Yeah, i agree that is a bit different. But of course, it must be in moderation. It could quickly become a nuisance if you did it often. Besides, a fished for compliment, whether its dating, or friendship, is really not much of a boost. Because inside you know it wasn't given freely, but that you had to pry it out, and in the back of your mind you feel short changed still.
 
I agree with Ugly on this. Mild hinting for a compliment from someone's significant other isn't a problem as long as it isn't non-stop. In my opinion, a decent man will keep his lady well complemented routinely to where she shouldn't need to be fishing for one, but there are those men that need an occasional reminder.

Non-stop fishing even in the context of a long term relationship just screams of emotional issues. In a former relationship it got to a point that I quit responding because it annoyed me so much. Even after the relationship was ended she still came fishing......awkward!
