This has, more or less, been my wilderness year. I have had a series of great disappointments that turned into blessings and back into disappointments (in some cases). Nothing terribly disastrous happened in the grand scheme of things, but there are memories and lessons I will carry with me into eternity.
I have learned that dedicating yourself to one thing can often mean the exclusion of others. Sometimes knowledge or confirmation of that exclusion is a joy.
I have learned that the education I am paying for has little to do with what I'm actually learning in the classroom and more to do with handling the situations around and beyond the classroom.
I have learned that friendships you question are not friendships at all.
I have learned to appreciate one's ability to maintain perspective and see the big picture whilst one is in the weeds.
I have learned that some things are simply non-negotiable, and that God will test us by putting us in situations in which it seems permissible to negotiate.
I have learned how my intellectual snobbery does not free me from my ingrained middle class status.
I have learned that it is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all... even though I have not definitively lost...yet.
To that same end I have learned that there are situations one's rational side vows they will never get into, and the heart will drag them into it anyway.
I have learned a good deal about political strategy.
I have learned that the times in which I work for a truly great and beautiful human being will be rare but worthy occasions.
I have learned never to trust local polling.
I have learned that sometimes the right man loses to the wrongest of men.
I have discovered my own propensity toward hyper-affection and loyalty after someone or something runs the gauntlet that is my inclination toward rational thought.
I have learned that retrospective analysis isn't a substitute for truth as it was experienced at the time. Don't confuse the two when talking with people.
I have learned that there is still much to learn.
