Hey Everyone,

An interesting topic came across my YouTube feed -- "The Treat Yourself Epidemic." The host was talking about how the thought of "Treating Yourself" has pretty much turned into a Scourge of Self-Indulgence.

What started out as "Self-Care" and "Rewards" for various tasks has now morphed into things such as:

* "Traffic was a bear today! I'm going to treat myself!"

* "What a long day! / The kids were really acting up! / My boss asked me do do something extra! I'm going to treat myself!"

* "I got my project done / homework finished / yard mowed! I'm going to treat myself."

* "It's Monday - argh! It's Tuesday -- I need a pick-me-up! It's Wednesday! Halfway through the week! It's Friday! It's Saturday! It's Sunday night! I'm going to treat myself!"

And so it goes...

The point is that people have turned what used to be occasional rewards into an everyday thing at every opportunity -- the $8 dessert coffee drink, the fried junk food (a donut, fast food meal, pizza, etc.), material items you enjoy buying (makeup, clothes, games, toys, tools, hobbies, etc.) -- all in the name of telling yourself that you were good, so now you must surely deserve a "treat."

The treats don't even have to cost anything but time and opportunity -- for some people, a treat might be playing games for an hour that turns into the rest of the day -- but at the cost of finishing important responsibilities and/or learning important new skills.

The conclusion to the discussion was that people's version of "Treating Themselves" has given way to a convenient excuse that abolishes all signs of self-control, becoming a large contributing factor to people's weight gain, financial hardships, poor time management, etc.

In other words, we need to bring back Self-Control and Delayed Gratification.

What are YOUR thoughts on both you and others wanting to "Treat Themselves?"

I was going to post this in Singles, as I wonder if Singles have more problems with "treating themselves" too often (with no one to really stop us,) but I've seen videos of married parents "rewarding" themselves with plenty of things, too.

* What do you define as treats? How much do you have to accomplish to "deserve" one? And how often should one get a treat?

* How do you keep the "treating yourself" from going too far? How do you set limits on budgets, calories, and time that is allowed?

* Do you see others taking the "treating yourself" notion too far as well? (Friends, family members, etc.) Would/do you confront them if they go too far? (A parent spending all their money, hoarding, becoming overweight and a recluse, etc.)

One of my "treats" is making tater tots and chicken strips in the air fryer! 😆 I know it doesn't sound like much, but recently I had to put myself in check, and limit this to only once per week.

I got careless and was trying to justify "treating myself" to 2 or 3 times instead! 😲 And both my wallet and the scale had something to say about that.

What are your thoughts on the right -- and wrong -- ways for people to treat themselves?

It can go too far. For many it has gone too far.

But... it has gone farther. Just ask the Greeks and Romans. There's a reason they are no longer the rulers of the known world. Once upon a time their decadence knew no bounds.

Which raises the question - if hard times don't knock us down soon, will that happen to us too? Will we fall apart because the bare minimum effort of keeping a civilization going is just too much for us to put up with anymore?

Sorry, that got dark fast.

I will say this: I grew up poor in the 80s.

When people grab a meal from a restaurant EVERY DAY, it still boggles my mind. That used to be once a month. Once a week if you were the rich family in town.

If anybody complains about the economy, you know they either grew up later than the 80s or they just weren't paying attention. Or maybe their memory is shot. We got WAY more than we had back then. I was not in the minority when I was a kid.

A cookie is a sometimes food...

Aside from that, I didn't know people had 'youtube feeds'. It sounds like those feeding tubes they have in hospital.

Or...is it just....first world problems.

My wallet is too small for my $50s and my diamond shoes are too tight!

The thing is, you make a good point.

I read the arguments from both sides about whether God is going to bless the USA, or abolish it for its disobedience.

Then I glance at the social commentary channels full of all the craziness on TikTok, people refusing to pay their bills, and telling others "Book that trip! You only live once!"

Sure, because what's another $5000 on top of all the other credit card charges they're drowning in?

I WANT to have hope for the USA, but I also try to be realistic (and I'm actually a pessimist at heart.)

Some people say, God Bless the USA!!

But lately, all I can find in my heart to say is, God, please forgive us.

Eh, I'm in the middle of the two extremes. I'm neither God bless America nor God forgive us.

God has already blessed America. That's covered. Asking for more is just flat-out greedy.

On the other hand we don't really realize how much we have because all but the very oldest of us have never had less. We don't know what real hardship is. So I can understand not realizing how greedy it is to keep saying God bless America in the middle of way more than enough.

I mean... Even Adam and Eve didn't realize how perfect their life was until they lost it. They were told there is even more they can have, so in the middle of perfection they reached for a promise of something more.

But I do think we are due for a reality check, something to reset our scale of what constitutes prosperity. And while I don't think condemnation out of all moderation is in order, I do pray God will help us get through the reset. If it comes, it's gonna be rough.

The only conclusion I've been able to reach after reading through this thread is: I need a treat.

What @Tall_Timbers has in mind for his treat!

Taking his favorite sidekick:

And cutting down @Lanolin's favorite sidekick!

After all, everyone likes a challenge!! :D

(This is joke from the "Pick Me, I Have a Keurig!" thread -- Tall Timbers said to pick him because he has a Husqvarna 455 Rancher Chainsaw -- and Lanolin promptly told him to stay away from her kauri tree.) 🤣

So...

Has treating really gone too far this time??! 😮
