Yes, I walked away from God when I got pregnant with my son and wasnt married

I saw how "christians" treated me and did not want to be part of it. Years later I learned not to care about others thoughts of me that I am a good mom and my son needs to be in church. So I went back, and stopped worrying about others and concentrated on my own soul.

Elizabeth, I'm sooooooooo sorry you were hurt so deeply and needlessly. Why is it so easy for some christians to grasp that confronting a brother/sister in Christ about shortcomings thing, but they totally MISS the part where Paul tells us to restore and encourage those who fall (which would be MOST, if not ALL, of us from time to time)?

Just last night I listened as a christian slapped around some famous pastors whom God forgave yeeeeeeeeeeeeears ago. I wonder how well we would all do if OUR deepest mistakes were smeared all over the media... But then...some folks like to pretend those things never happened in their own lives, huh? *shrugs*

Hugs! Great to see you in the forums. I've missed you. Beautimous pic btw :D

I so get that, Matthew! I think this was my problem too. My mom was a christian, but my stepdad wasn't, and I didn't know anyone who lived it out 24/7.

I came to know how important this was a few years ago. On my last day of being a cop, a fellow officer hugged me goodbye and told me that I was the only christian he'd ever known who lived it out 24/7. He said that the same people who preached to him about God and parked in church parking lots on Sunday were doing the same things he was doing while hanging in the bars on Saturday night. He's since married, has a beautiful family and has become an associate pastor. :)
I've never known anyone who lived it out 24/7, and that was always the problem, no example of everything I was hearing.

I think some people use their faith as a shield against all their weaknesses and actually turn their 'faith' into just another defense mechanism, and it is those Christians who tend to slam people for their mistakes and actually harm the image of Christianity for those they encounter and undermine the goals of trying to lead people to God.

I've seen a lot of that, and it's hard to get past when you're young and already rebelling against everything else in life.

I walked away from God once, but my intent wasn't rebellion or having anything against God. I had come to the realization that my faith and walk were no longer personal and that i was just going through the motions because that's what others expected of me. I realized i wasn't living it at home, but was a youth leader at two youth groups. So i decided to rethink if these were really my beliefs or not. I didn't use this as some excuse to go wild and live 'how i wanted'. I wasn't even really trying to walk away from God. Just verify my belief in Him, and the bible. Took about a year or so, as i didn't want to rush back into it out of habit, fear or obligation.

Ok, I keep looking at this thread and just have been biding my time in responding.

I spent a large chunk of my adult years not walking away from God, but running. Although I grew up in a christian home and was saved at a young age, I left the church at 18 and began to run. Unfortunately I found the love, acceptance, and understanding that I sought from God's people out in the world. I had never really felt accepted among my peers until my early 20's among very worldly people.

I spent 14 years running while God spent the same time chasing, trying to get my attention. It took a brush with the legal system at 30 to wake me up as to how far I had run, trying to escape the pain of my childhood. All I can say is praise God that He promises that He will not allow one of His to be snatched out of His hand. I may have kept jumping out, but He was always right behind me doing whatever it took to get me back. God, I have found, does practice tough love.

1 John 2:19
19They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

I think this verse here in 1 John speaks directly to the time when I had "walked away". I had not yet been born again, and I made this evident by my actions. I knew of God but I didn't know God, I knew of Christ but I didn't know Christ. Now that Christ has renewed my heart, soul, and spirit I can say that I will never "walk away" again.

Whatever strength there is in my faith is due to a certain dialectical process. Everyday I walk away from God only to find myself pulled back.
