I have heard of these too. How do you interpret those methods?Would these be similar, to look at scripture with inductive reasoning and deductive reasoning. which would be correct.

Amen, Trying to figure out what the author was saying is one thingI would say that the "appeal to time, history, and culture" is an essential part needed to give meaning to the text. So my view is that the legitimacy of hermeneutics is not the problem. The problem is when hermeneutics becomes disconnected from the Holy Spirit.
Another problem (which I think you may be hinting at) is when the application of the text to our daily lives is not talked about. Doing only exegetical hermeneutics to find correct doctrine becomes stale and useless if the faith is not lived out. Any unbeliever can give mental assent to a list of doctrines just as well as a seasoned, mature saint of God can.
However, a person must understand the meaning of the verse before the proper application can be found. Otherwise your application may be coming out of wrong doctrinal premises.
It can ever be deductive reasoning because deductive reasoning always begins with an already present theory or set of beliefs in the mind of the reader who then begins to search scripture for proof texts to defend those beliefs. Always start with scripture and allow the text to influence the mind. This is dangerous because we typically do not want our already established beliefs to be threatened by scripture.Would these be similar, to look at scripture with inductive reasoning and deductive reasoning. which would be correct.

Amen, Sadly way to many people do this..It can ever be deductive reasoning because deductive reasoning always begins with an already present theory or set of beliefs in the mind of the reader who then begins to search scripture for proof texts to defend those beliefs. Always start with scripture and allow the text to influence the mind. This is dangerous because we typically do not want our already established beliefs to be threatened by scripture.
Abductive reasoning would depend on where your stating point was in your search for an answer. Is it scripture, or is it logic and human rationalization.Well they are not the only way there’s abductive reasoning and a few others. I think this vid is a good interpretation

HERMENEUTICS = BIBLE INTERPRETATIONNow I have to go look up the definition of hermaneutics...
In that case most posters would fit into that category. There are some who have been so strongly indoctrinated that it is equivalent to brainwashing.Well if someone doesn’t want their established belief to be threatened by scripture then they probably aren’t being open to change.
Seems to me they all have problems.lolWell they are not the only way there’s abductive reasoning and a few others. I think this vid is a good interpretation
Reading? or Studying? Two very different tasks!Which of these methods do you feel is the most reliable approach for reading scripture? Anyone???
See post 13 for definition of terms.HERMENEUTICS = BIBLE INTERPRETATION
Not sure what "generalization" means, unless it means that the Bible is generally true. Or should we say invariably true?
That is so simple, even a child could come to that conclusion. For example the whole universe was created in six days. how do people come to that conclusion.
Literal interpretation. For example the whole universe was created in six days. how do people come to that conclusion?
The conclusion is drawn from the language of the text. For example the whole universe was created in six days. how do people come to that conclusion?
Exodus 20:11.For example the whole universe was created in six days. how do people come to that conclusion?
So what you are saying -- which is true -- is that everything is not explicitly stated, and that many things are implied. Also, that the whole tenor of Scripture leads to some general conclusions.See post 13 for definition of terms.
When there is every reason to take things literally, then that is the right way to understand Scripture. Otherwise all you have is flights of fancy. So which one is right?
Yes, this would be a place where historical context can not helpThe conclusion is drawn from the language of the text.
