Hello!
I'm new to the whole chat forum thing, and just realized that I should post some sort of introduction. My name is Daylilies, after my favorite type of flowers. I love nature, photography, music, art and spending time with my family and friends. I'm blessed to have many great friends, but many are married or single and not Christian; so I'm looking forward to have opportunities to chat with other single Christians.

Howdy Daylilies. It is dangerous to mention music around me, as I am a music nerd and I can talk music for days straight. If you get me started talking about music you are responsible for the resultant boredom. Seriously, I have actually seen eyes literally glaze over when I was talking about music.

I make people's eyes glaze over too! I love music, all different types. The question in life that causes me the most panic is when people ask me what my favorite type of music is or who my favorite artist is, because I have so many favorites! I have music playing all the time and go to any concert I can, from our local elementary school to community groups to major artists.

I just read your quote about singing and laughed right out loud because I got caught singing at Walmart yesterday - Hillary Scott's "Still". Embarrassingly enough, it was by one of the employees who has caught me singing before; thankfully he just smiled. :)

Do you play any instruments? I play piano and am trying to learn to play guitar.

It's so nice to meet a fellow "music nerd"! Its always great to be able to share suggestions for new songs and artists. :)
 
It depends on what you mean by "play." I make soundtracks for songs I want to sing at church, but I make them in a computer by loading virtual instruments and playing them through a midi-only 88-key keyboard. Semi weighted keys. I am not good enough to play in real time, but in a computer I can cheat. Transpose, quantize, time scaling, I can do a lot of stuff to make myself sound better than I am. As the objective is to make a soundtrack, not to show off, I am okay with cheating.
 
About your eclectic music taste, I also have a wide range of Music Styles in my collection. Christian, but all over the map for Style. Bluegrass gospel, black choir, southern gospel, Christian rap, Christian rock, contemporary... including some that was contemporary back in the eighties, which would make it no longer contemporary, but it is still classified as contemporary... Whatever, I like it.

It would be interesting to see you listening to some of my music collection. Almost everybody has one or two music styles that really gets on his nerves, so I can find something in my collection for almost anybody to hate.
 
Lynx, the process of creating the soundtracks sounds really interesting, and more complex than playing in real-time. What kind of software do you use for that? Is it like Noteflight or something specific for with the keyboard?

It has been a long time since I have played for anyone else, but I’m slowly building my skills back up in hopes to someday.

I would welcome song suggestions – perhaps you can find something that gets on my nerves! :p I meant it when I said that I listen to everything. I work with children and teens, and one of the easiest ways that I have found to connect with them is through music, so I try to listen to a wide variety of both Christian and non-Christian. I have a lot to learn about Christian music though, as I didn’t listen to much until a few years ago when a mentor encouraged me to listen as a form of prayer and worship. Ryan Stevenson and Gabe Real’s “Eye of the Storm”, Hillary Scott’s “Thy Will” and tobyMac’s “Backseat Driver” are some of my favorites at the moment – but that will probably change by Monday! I love Spotify’s playlists because they have helped to broaden my horizons.

Noteflight is... a lot like the MIDI editor in the program I use. I use Reaper (yeah, I know... cheerful name. They had a contest to pick a name long before I came around.) There are other, more popular programs - Reason, ProTools, FL Studio, etc. ProTools is probably the most well known one.

Basically the program gives you tracks, like the channels of a sound booth's main mixer. Each track can hold an audio file or a MIDI file. For the audio files you can import a file to the track or you can record live from a microphone source or eight mics or 16 or whatever your hardware can handle. For the MIDI files you can attach a virtual instrument that "plays" the MIDI notes, and there are some VERY realistic virtual instruments out there.

I'll send you a private message with some links to some soundtracks I've made, some songs I know and some demonstrations of what a virtual instrument can do. Don't want to clutter up this introduction thread (further) with music junk and make everybody get bored and drift away. :p
 
And I concur about picking a favorite. Out of more than 9,000 songs? Really? ONE favorite? I can't pick one hundred favorites! How can you say this song is better than that one? They are both good in different ways...

Can't agree about Spotify though. My Lynx Radio Station (my music collection playing on my phone) has a much larger playlist and no commercials. :p

I should probably post a warning now, that I will always try to stay on topic but get easily distracted and may need gentle reminders from time to time! Especially if it is a topic that I'm really interested in... :)
