HOW DOES A CHRISTIAN BECOME CLEAN AND STAY CLEAN?

This is a different interpretation to what I've been familiar~ (that Jesus was teaching them to serve one another with humility)? This event came on the heels of their disputing amongst themselves who would be greatest among them.~Luke 22

So this is a new one on me. Would you kindly say where it is written, "He said that they were clean but at times their feet would get dirty." Not calling you out, sincerely curious.

In a dual manner just like sanctification is dual in application

Eternally and spiritually through the blood of Christ being applied<---Sanctified positionally and eternally in Christ described in Hebrews

Physically in our daily life through the word and the transformation process described in Romans 12

Remember what Jesus said to the disciples...YOU are CLEAN through the word which I have spoken unto you

both are good understandings IMO

with reference to the bold type above: it doesn't make sense.

Yes, I have attended foot washing services and it does give you a lesson in humility. But it is such an edifying experience. Afterwards you feel so blessed. :)

Context is exactly the problem in understanding the importance of the washing of the feet. The context of the entire passage related to the feet washing highly suggests that there is more involved than Jesus giving an example of being a servant.

John 13:1-11
1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. 2 And [a]supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Him, 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, 4 rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. 5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. 6 Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, “Lord, are You washing my feet?”7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.”8 Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet!”Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”9 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”10 Jesus said to him, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.” 11 For He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, “You are not all clean".

The entire passage related to the washing of the feet can be found in John 13:1-11.
 
I believe vs 8 is key to understanding what it is to be "washed" ("clean):

John 13:8 Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.​


If we are not washed by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (as in He cleanses us), we have no part with Him.

The word "with" is very interesting. It is the Greek word metá. According to HELPS Word-studies, metá means with ("after with"), implying "change afterward" (i.e. what results after the activity). As an active "with," 3326 (metá) looks towards the after-effect (change, result) which is only defined by the context.

When we are first born again, I believe we are cleansed by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and I believe we stay clean as we abide (remain) in Him.
