Hey Everyone,

I'm interested in learning about other people's hobbies and interests, and I hear the term "foodie" thrown around so much that I'd like to hear from this elusive, but ever-so-interesting-sounding bunch.

1. What qualifies a person as a foodie? How is a foodie defined? My family teases me about the fact that I order a burger at nearly every restaurant (except Italian!!!) I suppose I would have to expand my tastes a bit in order to qualify?

2. What does one do to be a foodie? I mean, when is one just a regular consumer like myself vs. the elevated official title of foodie? How would I go about becoming a member of this exclusive group?

3. What kinds of events and activities do you participate in on a regular basis as a foodie? Do foodies usually cook and prepare as well, or just taste?

4. Do you, as a foodie find it hard to keep a healthy weight because of choosing food as a hobby, or it it helpful in allowing you to choose better quality foods and a healthier lifestyle?

When in doubt, I turn to my Panel of Experts right here at CC!! Happy sharing... Some of us may discover a new friend with a common love... or try a new hobby. :)

I have no idea what a foodie is. But I always order the big cheeseburgers at restaurants too, maybe we'll start our own hobby!

HOLD. THE. PHONE.

Food can be a hobby?!

Where have I been all my...wait...food, where has it been all...

I'll stop before I blow a fuse.

I had a springbok burger once and I wild boar one just before xmas oh and kangaroo. does that make me a burger foodie? I like beef burgers and lamb burgers and chicken burgers. I just like meat a lot tbh. :)

A foodie is someone who has more gourmet taste buds. In other words, hot dogs and potato chips are blasphemous. Steaks medium-rare, topped with whatever, with a ceasar salad with some kinda fancy vinaigrette is in. :p

Or you could just watch Food Network. That works too. :D (No seriously, you learn FAST what the term foodie is when you watch Food Network on a regular basis)

I wouldn't consider myself a HUGE foodie, but I like making food, and putting a slight spin on it. but I'm not gonna make something that goes beyond a 20 minute prep time and has more than 6 different steps. :p

oh and yeah I basically order cheeseburgers anywhere I go. I went to the Cheesecake Factory near the end of March, and though all the cheesecake options sounded good, appetizers and main meals were like "....What is this, I don't even..." so I ended up ordering a burger. :p

I'm more comfortable getting fancy in my own kitchen than going to a restaurant and ordering something fancy. Mainly because I just don't know how they make it and what all they put into it.

I think I would be considered a foodie when I am on business travel. Dos that count? :)

Seriously though, to me it's a little weird to go to restaurants alone, so when I am on business travel I try allot of different/good/expensive food to find out what I like. Duck/Quail/Grasshopper/Tongue etc.

I'm a Californian, so I hear that term daily. I guess I am one, too, but I hate that term. I guess they had to come up with a new name for something many of us have been doing our entire lives.

A foodie is basically a food lover who will be somewhat adventurous when eating out or creating in the kitchen. So yes, we cook as well. We like to put new spins on things - topping with breadcrumbs is out! You gotta use Panko now! and they love to entertain, so food presentation is important as well.

We tend to make it more casual than fussy by involving our guests in the process. Our logic is that since we enjoy this sort of thing, our guests must enjoy it too. Don't be surprised if a foodie friend invites you over for a brunch and while you are sipping your mimosa, you find that your host expects you to grab a handful of cheddar, bacon, chives, and mushrooms to be thrown in your custom omelette (s)he is making for you. You're the one customizing it by deciding what goes in it, after all.

Oh, we foodies like burgers too, so don't assume that you can't be a foodie if you are a burger lover. We just see the burger as a blank canvas for things such as bacon, bleu cheese, olive tapenade, mango chutney, pineapple teriyaki, grilled onion, avocado, curried eggplant, sauteed mushrooms, or other such delicacies. Many foodies will also ditch the bun and go for a Kaiser roll, grilled or pressed sourdough, a pita, panini, naan, or some other flatbread.

A good foodie will inquire as to your food preferences. For example, if I invited you and a few other people over for hamburgers (to keep with your example), I would ask if you liked lamb, since many people do not. I might make grilled lambburgers in a home-made whole wheat pita, but I would also make beef or turkey burgers for the non lamb lovers. In addition to the yogurty goodness and dill sauces to complement the lamb, I'd have the normal ketchup and mustard for the more traditional palates. Your beef burger might end up with some garlic butter on it, because I am sneaky that way, but I would not otherwise try to impose my taste preferences on you. Even a traditional beef burger in a pita can begin a wonderful food adventure! baby steps....baby steps....

I've had a stuffed burger before if counts. :) And I had my first-ever Kobe beef burger (but it wasn't all that expensive... I had it at Bonefish Grill) a few months ago. DELISH!!!

I'm thinking though that what I really need is to rope some gullible person, er, I mean, generous foodie :) into inviting me over for all that custom-made food.

No lamb burgers though, please. I'm definitely more of a "traditional palate" here :) but I'd definitely try the garlic butter (I'm not into ketchup, mustard, or mayo.)

Forget the baby steps... I'm ready to just dive right in!! Ha! ;)

I've given this a lot of thought, and I guess if I'm going to be a "foodie",
then I'm looking for a nice girl who is a "watchie".

I mean hey... that leaves a lot more for me... and it's MY hobby.
: )

Ok I think I might actually be a foodie, it is a surprise.

There is just one thing though, I have no idea what Panko is.

They are basically glorified bread crumbs, but flakier. Sometimes you can fake it with a 1/2 bread crumbs, 1/2 corn flakes (slightly crushed) mixture. :)

"Panko" sounds like a game...

Uh...Plinko? What the heck am I thinking of?

Ok I get it now.. I'm a little slow .. Yes I would be able to get along in this arena for sure!!!
Elk burgers mixed with gourmet spices
Fish on a grill with steamed garden veggies
I Mix and match and stuff and season a lot!!
So I guess that's a foodie
