I agree that the thought for thought versions are a little easier to just sit down and read, or for your first time all the way through. I know people who keep one in their bathrooms for this reason. :) Don't laugh people! It works! :D

I'm a fan of the NKJV for studying. :)

No matter what version we read, it's so important to pray first and allow the Holy Spirit to quicken it. It's His Word. We can trust Him to be the Teacher Jesus said He would be. :)

Hopefully without stirring up a hornets nest here, I recently bought a Message bible that I want to read straight through over the winter here. I struggle to read other translations as an entire work because they are so... segmented. There is a common thread, but I'm just not able to zone into what I"m reading. Without that, I can not read with any real comprehension for any real length of time.

I hear you..i must admit, I recently used some birthday money and a recent sale at family christian store to acquire a full bible version of THE VOICE bible by thomas nelson, and though i have a 'message bible',amplified, and others..my two go to ones are the CEB/common english bible latley and the VOICE.
I am trying to read more and i get distracted at times as well..the voice is called a dynamic equivalent, whatever that means..but so far i absolutely love it.

I've never read the entire Bible from cover to cover. The way I feel right now is reading it from cover to cover I probably wouldn't understand portions of it (still kinda new at this. :D ). I think I would rather spend my time reading and meditating on passages that I can grasp and apply to my life.

I never read the living bible, but I'm really digging into the message right now for just straight reading, it's easy and straight forward.

For hardcore studying I have a NASB and a KJV

The Living bible was like the message bible of the 70s..quite influential. I got one by the sink for toilet reading. Whenever i feel inspired. NCV is one i use in my devotional book(my time with God by max lucado, uses NCV/new century version) and even a 'one minute bible' helps. Lately i have been going through a lot, so reading even a small amount each day seems to help. Although there are days i fail miserably and get distracted, i am getting better at being more consistent.
