Hey Everyone,

First, a disclaimer -- this thread is in NO way meant to insult either men or women, nor is it trying to ignore or put down God's calling to those who are to be married. Rather, this discussion is meant to be a light-hearted look at some of the things we've learned to do on our own without a partner -- whether or not God has one for us in the future.

I love flowers, and one of the things I've greatly appreciated in the past were the few times when a guy brought me flowers. Starting around kindergarten, a boy at school picked a "flower" growing in the soccer field and brought it to me -- and I was smitten. Sadly, we went our separate ways after 8th grade (literally, as we went to different schools,) but I have loved flowers ever since. :D

Over the years, I've had a very tumultuous relationship with plants, as I seem to kill at least half (or more) of the ones I bring home, no matter how "easy" they're supposed to be.

But last year, for the first time ever, I was able to grow pansies from seeds; this year, ironically, NONE of the pansy seeds sprouted, but I DID wind up with a pot of cosmos.

Now mine don't look NEARLY as good as this picture (they're a little thin and scrawny,) but almost everyday, I have at least one cut flower I can put in a bowl in my kitchen -- and it feels like an accomplishment!

My next big step up was to buy a rose plant that has produced clusters of small pink roses, and if I have any success with that, I plan to upgrade to full-size roses next year (but all in containers.)

A few days ago when I had collected several flowers to put on display, I jokingly thought to myself, "I don't need no man!"

Please realize, I AM JUST KIDDING. I am NOT trying to insult men in any way, nor am I trying to embody the spirit of Jezebel, or invoke some evil feminist agenda that tries to say women don't need men! And no, I'm not trying to say that I would try to use a man to buy me flowers (I can buy my own -- it's just that I've been experimenting with buying them both in seed and plant form!) These days, cut flowers are so expensive and die so quickly, even if I did have a guy, I'd suggest that if we were to spend money on flowers, we could get something we could grow ourselves.

I have a guy friend from CC, though he's not here anymore, who also loves flowers and generously cheers me on whenever I take a picture of my latest "harvest" (but also doesn't make fun of me when I send shots of my -- many -- failures.)

I feel very thankful that in my single time, God is teaching me how to grow a few things on my own (SLOWLY, very slowly!), and if I ever meet a guy friend close by or have a significant other who likes flowers, I just might be taking flowers -- to HIM instead of the other way around!:D:geek:

How about you? What are some things in your single life that you've learned on your own, that you might have otherwise relied on a partner for?

* What kinds of skills and hobbies have you picked up/worked on/honed? Are they things you hope to share with a future spouse?

* What things have you learned to repair, renovate, or redo by yourself? (Cars, appliances, furniture, squeaks and creaks, etc.?)

* What are some domestic chores you've had to take on by yourself? (Sewing and mending clothes, putting things together or back together, cleaning out ducts, etc.)

* What things have you learned to adapt to (eating in restaurants alone, going to movies alone, traveling alone, etc.) that make YOU jokingly say, "I don't need no man or woman -- but I'm open to whatever God's will is for me!"? :)
I have missed your depth. I enjoyed reading this very much!!!

Your flowers are beautiful 😍

I have heard that in this year, not all seeds have sprouted, I have many flower seeds that just did no grow, so did my aunt. Also cucumbers and beans did not sprout well... When you expect a full bloom from a flower seeds you sow, a whole package, and get a few little flimsy stems that you can barely see from 3 foot away.. But happy your cosmos sprouted! Flowers brighten the day!
I also like to bring in a one flower to a small vase! Currently have none, I should go get one!
This year my pionies bloomed so well, and I decided to bring a bunch indoor, as I do not see them very often as they are in corner of my garden.

Things I had to learn... chancing the tyres for a car, back in the day, my dad would not let me drive his car if I didn't know how to chance the tyres (for winter and for summer). But now it is sooo much easier with impact wrench, my brother left his old one to me. Before I always asked if he was coming around so I could use his, but in the end he always was the one chancing the tyres for me (I did not ask him to, I only asked for the wrench) and I was just a helper, also helped when he changed tyres for his car of course.

In spring my car decided to kill it's left light, and one light for the registration plate.. I drove about a month before I did anything, the starting part is the most hard, because I know these "newer" cars have so little hand space to change the lights that it is a pain! (and my "new" is 2012 model...)

It is actually my brother who has made me do things;

"here is a petrol poweder weed eater, it's better than the electric one"
It sure is more poweful, I love it.

"There also is clearance saw, use it for the willows in the meadow and in the ditch"
Now I just should sharpen the blade (I wonder if they sell that service anywhere..)

"You can knock those trees down by yourself, here is a chainsaw, just go buy safety gear first"
I did leave the leaning ones to my brother, because there was road next to them.

"You need to learn to blow the snow with a tractor, let me teach you how to do it.. and if the tractor doesn't start do this to it.."
I cannot put the snow blower behind the tractor, or change it to something else tho, not that I would even need to.

Was about to go but the title of this thread grabbed my attention. Personally think a lot of the need to be part of a couple, might have more to do with social conditioning than anything.

As an old dear who's experienced both singledom and marriage, think i became more my actual self as i aged and just didn't have much in common with my then husband/children's Dad anymore. It seems to me that such relationships were treated more seriously during much of our history and that love/lust etc weren't major factors in their formation.

Might seem weird considering i've developed really nasty arthritis but i'm more relaxed and content now than at any other time in my life. Just my little cat and i living together, she was 11 on Thursday so we're both old dears and totally cosy together.

Oops! Missed the humorous bit, i'm playing chess online too. Probably not a good enough excuse but don't have another one.
