14) God and Samuel / Samuel and God

- Samuel beat the Ammonites!

- Then Samuel gives his last will to Israel!

Finally Samuel said to all Israel: “Here I have done all that you asked of me, and I appointed a king to reign over you. Now here is the king who is leading you!As for me, I have grown old and gray, and my sons are here with you, and I have led you from my youth until this day. Here I am. Testify against me before God and before his anointed one: Whose bull or whose donkey have I taken? Or whom have I defrauded or crushed? From whose hand have I accepted a bribe to make me look the other way? If I have, I will restore it to you.”To this they said: “You have not defrauded us or crushed us or accepted anything at all from anyone’s hand.” So he said to them: “God is a witness against you, and his anointed one is a witness this day that you have found nothing to accuse me of.” To this they said: “He is a witness.”

- Remember this expression: God is a witness against you!

- I would say God is a witness about Samuel’s faithfulness to him!

So Samuel said to the people: “God, who used Moses and Aaron and who brought your forefathers up out of the land of Egypt, is a witness. And now take your positions, and I will judge you before God in view of all the righteous acts that God has done for you and for your forefathers. “As soon as Jacob had come into Egypt and your forefathers began calling to God for help, God sent Moses and Aaron to lead your forefathers out of Egypt and to cause them to dwell in this place. But they forgot God their God, and he sold them into the hand of Sisʹe·ra the chief of the army of Haʹzor and into the hand of the Phi·lisʹtines and into the hand of the king of Moʹab, and they fought against them.

- Yes, they were in a hurry to forget God and they paid the price again and again and he would strike them again and again!

And they called to God for help and said, ‘We have sinned, for we have left God to serve the Baʹals and the Ashʹto·reth images; now rescue us out of the hand of our enemies so that we may serve you.’

- Do you see the difference with Job?

- Rescue us and we will serve you!

- What do you say? A chosen people? Not at all!

18) God and Samuel / Samuel and God

So Samuel said to the people: “Do not be afraid. You have indeed done all this evil. Only do not turn away from following God, and serve God with all your heart. Do not turn away to follow the empty things, which are of no benefit and cannot rescue, because they are empty.

- It seems to be that Samuel is saying: look at what you are going to do because you never listen, you are completely stubborn!

- They only know evil!

- They are only looking for empty things because they are empty!

- What a condemnation!

22) God and Samuel / Samuel and God

- Saul wants to go after the Philistines!

- So he asks if he has God’s favor!

- But God doesn’t answer!

- Then Saul wants to kill his son Jonathan because he ate some honey!

- But the people refuse because he started fighting against the Philistines and he was the initiator of their victory against the Philistines!

- So Saul stops pursuing the Philistines!

- Then Saul secures his kingship over Israel and fights against all his enemies!

- He spends all his days fighting against the Philistines!

- But the time has not come for him to die yet!

26) God and Samuel / Samuel and God

- Finally, Samuel indicates he has come for the youngest son of Jesse!

- And samuel anoints David as king of Israel!

- And God’s spirit leaves Saul!

- And God terrorizes him with a bad spirit!

- So his servants look for someone who can play the harp and calm Saul down!

- So Saul is told about David!

- And Saul sends messengers to Jesse so David can come to him!

- And David begins serving him!

- And David becomes his armor-bearer!

- And Saul starts to love David a lot!

- When a bad spirit from God comes upon Saul, David plays the harp and it goes away from Saul who feels better!

- Thus God prepares David to become a king!

- His will is effective!

- It doesn’t matter how Saul acts, David will become king of Israel!

30) God and Samuel / Samuel and God

- Then David goes to Jonathan!

- And Jonathan tells him he will be able to warn him if his father tries to do something against him!

- But David thinks that Saul won’t say anything to Jonathan!

- So David tells him what to do!

- And David waits for Jonathan’s answer!

- And Jonathan tells David to flee!

- Samuel was always there as judge till Saul became king of Israel!

- As Samuel had said, things started to go wrong and Saul was rejected by God!

- And God chose David as new king!

- And Saul knew that God was with David!

- So he spent his time trying to kill him!

- But he never succeeded!

34) God and Samuel / Samuel and God

chap 22

- Then the king said to Doeg: “You turn and assault the priests!” Immediately Doeg the Edomite went and assaulted the priests himself. He killed on that day 85 men wearing the linen ephod. He also struck Nob, the city of the priests, with the sword; man as well as woman, child as well as infant, bull, donkey, and sheep, he put to the sword. However, one son of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, whose name was Abiathar, escaped and ran away to follow David. Abiathar told David: “Saul has killed the priests of God.” At this David said to Abiathar: “I knew on that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would be sure to tell Saul. I am personally responsible for the death of everyone in your father’s house. Stay with me. Do not be afraid, for whoever seeks your life seeks my life; you are under my protection.”

- Thus 85 men are killed but also the women and the children!

- What an abomination!

- But God is patient!

- And he will strike Saul and all his house in due time!

- It was so different each time the Israelites opposed God!

- Then he wanted to destroy thel completely and without waiting!

- Only Moses could prevent him from doing it!

- Let’s remember all these facts!

- And keep them in our mind!

- There is always a price to pay!

chap 26

- Once again Saul goes after David!

- Once again David has the possibility to kill Saul but he doesn’t do it!

- When Saul hears about it, he returns to his place!

- So once again David shows himself as a man of God!

- But he is not yet king!

41) God and Samuel / Samuel and God

chap 31

- The israelites are defeated by the Philistines!

- Saul and his three sons die!

- The philistines cut Saul’s head!

2 Samuel

- David becomes king!

- Later he will commit adultery with Bath-Sheba!

- He has Bath-Sheba’s husband, Uriah killed!

- Then he takes Bath-Sheba as wife!

- David will get into trouble for the rest of his life for what he has done!

- David will organize a census of the people against God’s will!

- The price: pestilence kills 70,000 Israelites!

- Just as Samuel said, human kings would bring big troubles without exception!

- And it wasn’t different with Solomon with all his wisdom!

- Third key: Eli’s sons!

- If they had listened to their father and to God, God wouldn’t have spoken to Samuel!

- And he wouldn’t have told him about the condemnation of Eli and his sons!

- And he wouldn’t have seen Eli and his sons’ death!

- It wouldn’t have been a warning!

- It wouldn’t have impressed his young mind!

- He could have become just a priest but not a judge and prophet!

- At the end of the road, Jesus had to come and God’s word had to spread all around the world!

- But we would have lost an incredible source of faithfulness and it has no price to guide us to a basic relationship to God or to a stronger one!

- That’s a big difference!

3) Again in Chapter I, we have two types of woman!

- Hannah is the good one!

- And not only for women and mothers but also for men and fathers!

- She shows us the right way!

- She gives a good education to her son!

- She brings him to the temple to serve God!

- She visits him regularly every year!

- We don’t have any information about the quality of relationship between Hannah and Samuel!

- It would have been quite interesting!

- We can only imagine!

- We only know that she was a good example for Samuel!

- And she kept her word to God!

- The Bible doesn’t have many good models to follow!

- Thus they are more precious!

- On the contrary, they is a majority of bad examples we must avoid if we want to develop a strong relationship to God!

- Thus it is quite easy to follow a bad example!

- There is such a big range!

7) In 1 Samuel 8, we are told that Samuel is now old!

- He has kept serving God all his life!

- He appointed his two sons as judges over Israel!

- But they are corrupted!

- We don’t have any information about how it happened!

- What we know is that Eli was condemned, not Samuel!

- On the contrary, he kept maintaining the quality of his relationship to God!

- And when Israel asked for a human king instead of God, he was displeased!

- It happens because of his sons but it would have happened for any reason because Israel was obstinate and they were used to go away from God!

- So once again we may hear the same warning!

- God says to Samuel that Israel was rejecting him once again as they had always been doing it starting the moment they left Egypt thanks to God!

- And humanity has been doing the same!

- May I ask a question to everybody ?

- I will let people time!

- Then I will answer too!

- There is no trap!

- WHAT IS ALL THE BIBLE ABOUT EXCEPT THE FACT THAT IT IS GOD’S WORD ?

- There may be different answers depending on the elements we have!

The Bible is showing God's perfect design, from the flawless good will of God that is right for us, and how rebellion from humans of God's creation came to the fall with sin that ruined that world for us, and leads to death for all of us, and the rest of it is unfolding hidden truth with the developments through history, that we must still learn, for restoration, turning from sin with repentance and coming to salvation with faith through Jesus Christ by God's grace.

Death came into creation with the fall when the original man disobeyed in rebellion to God. Sin, any sin, brings curse into the world, separating the world with us from God's providence. God is still gracious and so Christ was sent, the incarnation of the Word with God who is God, for restoration of the repentant through the atonement with their response of faith, those ones can be delivered with creation that groans for that restoration, with all the curse on the world with those unrepentant cast to where there is fair justice after judgment. With more curse that there is with more disobedience to God's will we come to our death even faster.

When I think about Samuel I can’t avoid thinking of his two sons. When he was brought to the temple he was in contact with Eli’s sons who were priests serving at the temple. But they were badly. But it did not prevent Samuel to become God’s faithful servant. We can imagine that as High Priest Samuel was busy at God’s service. Unfortunately, we don’t know how he raised his children and what he did to educate them. And in fact, it’s the same for God’s faithful servants. We know that God educated them through hard life: Moses and David went to the wilderness and they were trained so.
It says that Eli knew that his sons were vile and restrained them not. 3:13

- God could have destroyed Israel twice!
- Moses prevented God from doing it!
- It was anger in connection with Israel's attitude!
- Think about Daniel's prayer for Jerusalem's restoration!
- And God's answer: RESTORATION FOLLOWED BY DESTRUCTION!
- Because of Israel's attitude!
