Just curious, since many of the trolls that come on here just come back again with a new name, is there no option for the mods to ban an IP address?

Professionals change them with proxys or something or they have dozens of different ones. Don't know how they do it. I went to christian cafe once. Every day the same new love scammers, got banned, whoop, returned the next day, on and on.
 
They can also just make a different email address under another name, and that changes their IP address, I think..
 
They have IP bans, but it is not done unless there are multiple issues from the same IP.
 
If I were to explain how bans work in reference to IP addresses I would basically have to post how people get around them which would just make the problem of persons getting around bans worse. Needless to say there are several ways around IP bans.

Some persons have the misconception that IP's are assigned to an individual computer, they are not. IP's are directly related to the Internet Service Provider.

There are people who download illegal movies who know how to change their I.P. address. One day they are in Hong Kong from their Home and another day they are in London. One of my co-workers downloaded a virus doing it. Our I.T. guy at work said not to do it.

There are other people who go to libraries and get second accounts because they've been banned. Do you want to ban the internet at my church or a library because someone was using the free internet and didn't behave? You would end up banning every other person who doesn't cause a problem. I can get free internet at a lot of stores and restaurants as well. I get free internet at my relative's and friend's house. Think about it. You could ban my work account and no other Christian after me would be able to log in.

Back in the day there were dial up modems and they voice verified people by requiring them to leave their phone number. That is how they knew if you were real or not.

My brother is a programmer, so through him I understand a lot about IP addresses and how people use multiple IP addresses. While some may circumvent the blocking of their IP adddress', not all will, and probably most of them won't. I think it should be done when you all deem it appropriate. Blocking some of them is better then blocking none of them.
 
Do the forums have a way of checking for words in titles of new threads?
ie: Could one make them do a regex search for phone numbers and refuse them? (as some of the repeat threads have some sort of phone numbers in them) ?

I'm sure that's possible. Takes some time though. I don't think vbulletin has that built-in function. Maybe an advanced module but someone may have to manually add that function, which I don't see happening anytime soon.

to OP, you've never used a proxy? I wouldn't have made it out of high school alive if I didn't discover proxies to play tankball during computer class

Yeah I have I was just wondering if the site was using IP bans as a primary measure.
 
IP address bans are not full proof like many might believe. Typical static IP addresses (ones that don't change) you actually have to pay extra money for otherwise your internet provider just assigns you a random address. Under various conditions, you will get assigned a new random IP depending upon your provider.
