You didn't take into account where up is.Down is always relative to the individuel.. So down is everything below you into infinity.. So down will continue way past the centre of the earth for you.. Your down is probably not the same as my down because i am Australian,

The verse is speaking about the spiritual, the living, the dead. Not about the shape of earth.
The Jews understood many biblical concepts poorly. Weren't they a little confused about Messiah? Do you have a picture of Ancient Hebrew conception of Messiah?
