Thanks for adding that you were playing a trick!

Jeremiah has always been one of my favorites, due to his extreme honesty regarding his depression, telling God he was too young, etc.

I was also always amazed at the close, though turbulent, relationship he had with God, with God saying, "People are going to be smiling and pretending to agree to your face, but behind your back, they'll be plotting your death." WOW.

When you mentioned "Jeremiah's daughter," I was floored, because I was always intrigued by how God had set him apart by telling him he was not to marry or have children.

I'm about to start another "cover to cover" reading of the Bible (8th,) and I was thinking I had SERIOUSLY missed something VERY important in my studies!

Sorry , I was feeling a bit naughty . I don't usually post actual Bible quotes , I remember how when I first started reading the Bible , it helped me enormously to look things up in an actual paper Bible , it helped me to get familiar with where all the books were and my favourite chapters in them etc . I still never use an electronic Bible and always look things up in my concordance instead of the internet etc . I remember things much better if I made the effort to find them and read them for myself out of the actual Bible , it also keeps the quotes in context I think . Just my preference . Also , I'm not a great typist , only use my mobile phone and my fingers hurt badly after only a shirt while .

Jeremiah 17:5-8

5 Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD.

6 For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited.

7 Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is.

8 For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.

vs 5 – if and when we trust in man ... place our trust in man's strength ... we turn our hearts away from the Lord and His strength.

vs 6 – those who depart from the Lord are desolate ... they cannot see when good comes so are unable to enjoy the good when it comes ... they are empty/parched/scorched.

vs 7 – those who do not turn from the Lord, trust and hope in Him ... they are blessed with heavenly blessings.

vs 8 – they are fruitful ... they shall not see when heat comes ... they are continuously blessed. Even in the hard times, they do not cease from yielding fruit.

I love these verses in Jeremiah.

Me too , very powerful and of course , written for us . I think many people don't ever seem to connect the Old Testament to themselves , which is a big mistake in my opinion . It is the same Spirit in the Old and New and there r very many important lessons in the Old that help to bring us into a better understanding and appreciation of the New . It's all God's Word and , it's all there because God wants us to read it and draw closer to Him through it . Why would any of us not want that ? .

I think many people don't ever seem to connect the Old Testament to themselves , which is a big mistake in my opinion . It is the same Spirit in the Old and New and there r very many important lessons in the Old that help to bring us into a better understanding and appreciation of the New . It's all God's Word and , it's all there because God wants us to read it and draw closer to Him through it . Why would any of us not want that ? .

OT writings are a treasure trove. The Lord Jesus Christ referred to OT writings ... the book of Acts ... Paul's writings ... the book of Hebrews ... Revelation ... all refer to OT writings.

Sometimes, if I'm reading in the NT and there is a reference to an OT writing, I'll go back and read the section in the OT being referred to ... brings deeper meaning to the NT writing (imo).

What is written in Jeremiah 17:5-8 reminds me of what is written in Psalm 1.

Just read a few more chapters of Jeremiah this morning . Ch 23 was very powerful to me . It's a very strong warning to us all , that we do not tell lies about what is written in God's Word and , that we don't listen to others that do so . To accomplish this , we MUST read God's Word for ourselves , the Old Testament as well as the New . It is the same God and the same Spirit in both and both r there for our benefit , to bring us to a better understanding of , faith in and love for , our God the Holy One of Israel .

totally agree, Suze. I love the verse in Ephesians 4 which tells us "That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive". If we don't know what God's Word says, how would we know when someone speaks a "wind of doctrine" in an effort to deceive us?
