Can you speak about your near-death experience if it is not too personal and if you don't mind? I would like to put the puzzle together! Or at least get some elements!

What does he ask of his friends? What doesn't he want from them?

Job wants them to understand his mistake. He wants them to speak honestly and look at him. But he doesn’t want their reproof. And he doesn’t want them to misjudge him. But if we listen to his companions it seems that Job doesn’t know anything and that they know everything.

In fact, Job suffers physically and mentally. Like in the parable of the good Samaritan they could heal his injuries. Then you listen and you listen just asking the right questions showing your concern but you don’t make accusations. It is necessary to be positive not negative. Otherwise it can only be worse. Then you must help him to recover and encourage him and you stay with him.

Is Zophar making the same argument as Bildad (chapter 18)? In what sense does Zophar answer Job's previous speech? Or does he?

Yes, the wicked man will be destroyed by God. So it is the same argument. So he tries to answer Job again by saying he is wrong and he is wicked.

With the third and final speech by Eliphaz, the debate takes a nastier turn. What does Eliphaz accuse Job of?

He says that God doesn’t care about Job and his integrity. On the contrary, Job is wicked and made many errors and he makes a summary of all his false accusations against Job (seize a pledge from his brothers, strip people of their garments, didn’t give water to a tired one or food to the hungry one and let the widows and fatherless children empty-handed).

According to Elihu, Job is like the wicked.(34:7-8, 36) Why? What has Job done which is so reprehensible?

Because he has said there is no benefit trying to please God and he speaks against God.

Do people have any power to manipulate God, according to Elihu?

Human actions can’t affect God !

Do you find the arguments of Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar credible today? That is, do you believe that wickedness and righteousness get their reward in this life? Is there a "moral structure" to the universe which is centered upon compensating or punishing human behavior?

That’s really a good question. A drug dealer can make a lot of money but he must always be careful, he spends his life using violence but like a boomerang it can also be struck by violence. He can be caught by justice. He can kill and be killed. Usually you need to be a shark if you want to become rich and the atmosphere is artificial. Of course, we live in an artificial world with many simulations, is that happiness. It seems to be an empty world with no hope, just illusions as we see the world going down. When you try to be right as far as it is possible in this world, you may not be rich, but having moral values help a lot to be in peace with oneself and the hope of having the possibility to work one day for God in a world controlled by him feels the heart and the mind with serenity.

Is God responsible for what Satan does?

God permitted Satan to attack Job, so in that sense God was responsible (1:12; 2:6). But God is not morally responsible for Satan’s wickedness. Since the Bible teaches that God is holy (Lev. 11:45) and righteous in all His ways (Psalm 145:17), we know He does not devise evil (James 1:13–15). He cannot be made a scapegoat for Satan’s destructive activities.

Satan is the great liar who chose to defy God and was banished from God’s presence with the other fallen angels (Luke 10:18). Satan is called the prince of this world (John 12:31). Christ’s entrance onto the stage of human history was the long-promised part of God’s plan to redeem the world from his tyranny. Satan’s final judgment awaits the return of Christ and the consummation of the age when Satan is cast into the abyss (Rev. 20:10).

Tracing evil back to God has been much debated throughout the centuries. Theologically, we know that God is holy and reigns supreme, yet Satan has limited power within the parameters of God’s sovereignty. Evil in no way can be traced back to God in terms of culpability for it. Although God knows good and evil (Gen. 3:22), He is good (Psalm 100:5) and is good to all (Psalm 145:9); He takes no pleasure in evil (Psalm 5:4).

I have nothing to say against this answer! For sure one day God will eradicate evil from the universe and no one will have the right to discuss his authority on all his creation!

8. Did God ever tell Job of the conversation that happened between God and Satan?

Not that we know of. It’s one of the great questions I’ve had about the book—why didn’t God let Job know? I assume it was one of the great experiences of heaven as Job saw what had happened. So it will probably be for us; when we get to heaven we will see all the times God was working in ways we did not understand.

Yes, the book of Job doesn’t say anything about it. But most important God blessed Job a lot more and not only that but he condemned Job’s three companions and he put them in his hands and he was careful when he spoke to job as he never did with any human being in the Bible and he took the time to explain him there are matters human beings have no idea at all !

Considering how hard the book of Job is to read and understand the first time, what is the best way to communicate the lessons to someone else?

I wouldn’t feel pressure to explain everything. I would try to understand these lessons for ourselves, live by them, and be prepared to assist people in the midst of suffering. However, my goal would not be for the person to completely understand as much as it would create in them a desire to know. Pray that God would give you the words to say which will whet their appetite for more.

I like the expression « whet their appetite for more » ! Yes the more we read the Bible and think about it the more we need to keep doing it ! And the book of Job goes in this direction ! It is an invitation to a journey that will turn our thoughts into something else or help us open our eyes !

Job was an adult; what do we as adults tell children about the suffering they experience?

All we can do is to assist them in the midst of suffering. It’s important that we are not an Eliphaz, Bildad, or Zophar as a parent. Our children do not need trite answers or parents who deny the realities of life. They need God in the midst of their suffering. This world hurts and they will be stung by the sorrows of this world. In those moments, our children need us to be able to point them toward truth. We may not be able to understand everything, but we can provide deep truths—God is in control; He loves us; He uses suffering to reveal himself to us; and this world is not our home and won’t be made right until Jesus returns. The experience of suffering by our children should drive us to know God more so that we can tell them about him.

There are good ideas here. Personally I would start listening to them and let them express their suffering because it must go out again and again And I would try to pray with them to show them how important the prayer is to get in touch with God and how real it is to me. And I would like to go out and walk with them and be one with nature and do things together to be active and build something, they must know I will always be there for them !

37. I have never suffered like Job, how does this book apply to me?

Everyone suffers. We should never compare one suffering to another. While each suffering has unique characteristics, they also share common qualities. Even if we haven’t suffered to Job’s extent, we can learn from his experience. We should never diminish someone’s suffering as insignificant because it appears less than ours.

We have a lot to learn about Job’s experience and we must also prepare ourselves because when it happens, if it happens, it can be destructive ! And it is always easier when we are mentammy prepared !

Final Conclusion

When we are feeling stressed and frustrated and wounded by this world may we step back and take a look at all of God’s creation. Get outside under the big sky and remind yourself who your God is. Then, get into His word and learn more about God’s love for you. Trust that if he can create and sustain the entire universe, surely He will take care of you.

Yes, but not only look at but observe carefully God’s creation and the daily miracle of life and then we do the same with God’s word the Bible, we must get deep inside day after day !
