That’s too much for Job: he wants to die and he asks God to help him die: he doesn’t see any hope! Death is associated to comfort, joy. He doesn’t know if he can wait for it! Even his family is of no hope! Job says that his associates are of no hope for him! On the contrary! He is desperate, he needs comfort!
Job 6:27: “ye dig a pit for your friend”: The image is clear!
He asks them for help but they don’t care, they push him in the pit!

What would you do to comfort a friend? And someone who wants to die and is hopeless?

Sometimes it is necessary to go down before going up for a new start. When we have a quiet life we may forget what is important. it's like sleeping! Or think about all the "old people" who live in old people houses or at home but they are alone, they just sleep and eat waiting for death, having no project. But it's not because you are "old" that you are finished! There is always something to learn, to make you happy! And anyway what does that mean being old! When you are active you feel young!

Thanks to ewq1938, I have to spend more time on this chapter to put it right !

Chapter 6 : At the beginning of the Chapter he explains how bad he feels ! And that’s the reason why he speaks so : look at the end of verse 3 : he speaks about impetuous words or wild talk ! It is not pride ! We can take our personal example when we feel bad, I’m not even saying at Job’s level, how our words can go further than our thoughts ! And it is not pride ! If we think of verse 4, we must connect with what comes before and after ! Verse 5 : will you cry out there is no need, when you are in the pit you need to cry louder ! You may think it is not a proper way, but again imagine yourself in a very bad situation ! Verse 8,9,10 : he keeps asking God for death ! Second part of verse 10 : « For i have not concealed the words of the Holy One ». Think of verse 11 : he doesn’t know if he is able to wait for death ! To express his mental condition, he explains that even his own family has abandoned him ! Verse 24, 25: he is asking his associates to teach him and to make him understand his mistakes ! But if they just reprove him, it is of no help ! Verse 26,27 : here are hard words but true ones :
« Do ye imagine to reprove words, and the speeches of one that is desperate, which are as wind ? »
« Yea, je overwhelm the fatherless, and ye dig a pit for your friend. »

Wait a bit for the next chapters ! It is hard work and time consuming work !

What is easier: speak when we feel bad or say nothing? When we speak and / or act, does it mean we are asking for help and / or we are trying to help ourselves?

Job could live a lot more than us and in a better shape especially because he was a wise man following God and avoiding excesses. He could increase his wisdom to a great extend taking advantage of his big trouble caused by the devil. Unfortunately, today many people get older and they can’t enjoy this time of life. Personally I enjoy getting older because I see the big difference between what I know at the present time compared to last year or before. There is so much to learn . Of course it is necessary to adapt to our physical changes but we must also protect our health capital. We need both our mental and health capitals, they are like twin brothers or sisters who can’t live separate from the other.

Does God set any limits to the damage Satan can inflict upon Job?

We know that God allowed the devil to strike Job really strong by taking his belongings and killing his children and striking his body through disease and his mind through his wife and family and companions. But he doesn’t allowed him to kill Job. It would have been a nonsense because by killing job he would have directly acknowledged he was a liar! But with the devil you never know as he knows how to turn into an angel of light!

Does Job agree with Bildad's confident knowledge of how God treats the upright and the wicked? What does Job know of God acting in the universe?

He knows that man is nothing compared to God in terms of wisdom and power. God can do anything and nothing is impossible to him. If he has to argue with God he must choose his words. But according to his physical condition, he doesn’t think that God will answer or listen to him. Job is not confident about himself. So for job God destroys the innocent and the wicked alike. God acts according to his will. The earth is full of wickedness. So Job doesn’t want to struggle.

Job makes two requests of God (13:20-23) What are they? And are they reasonable, given what he knows of God?

He wants God to stop striking him and he doesn’t want to be terrified by God.

I don’t know if it’s reasonable . But what I know is that Job suffers extremely and he complains about that. Of course, he doesn’t understand what is going on, but who would understand ?

Anything new here? (chapter 25)

No, he keeps saying God is powerful and no one can be compared to him.
I don’t see the interest to repeat the same arguments all the time except if you think people are deaf.

Is God, like Job's friends, pressing Job to admit that he had done wrong and deserved punishment? If not, what point is God making here? Is it any different than Elihu's argument in chapter 37?

Of course not, he knows perfectly that he is righteous. He says that there are many things Job doesn’t know. It is like Elihu’s argument.

Big Questions From the Book of Job

If you’re like me, the Bible can sometimes leave you with more questions than answers. The book of Job is one such book. There is something so emotional, so human about Job’s experience of loss, suffering, and questioning. Job, like us, did not have the answers he wanted. For me, every time I read from this book, I walk away feeling outrage, sadness, joy, longing, empty, or full; it’s different each time.

That’s the interest, it’s like opening a door and you get more doors to open. Personally I don’t feel the same but the more I read it, the more I want to read it, the more I get to know Job and the more I think about my personal relationship with God, its a kind of introspection.

1. Can the Book of Job be considered a work of fiction?

I don’t see anything in Scripture which would point to the book being a parable or fable. It seems like a real account.

I agree but more than that it is alive, it is powerful, it is life itself. At the same time we see God believing in Job’s faithfulness and Job believing in God. The two shares an incredible relationship which is really rare in the Bible. Of course, Job knows his place but he wants to speak with God and he has questions. He doesn’t want to stay quiet. He suffers a lot and he needs to complain and to express his pain and everything and everybody is against him but he keeps faithful whatever may happen. And his suffering is such that he wants to die to rest and be in peace. And he opens his heart and his mind to a great extent!

17. Would Satan had won if Job hadn’t prayed for his friends?

I think so. The text doesn’t say, but I think that would’ve proved Job’s disobedience which would’ve been Satan’s point.

Strange thought ! The issue was about Job’s faithfulness and Job praying or not for his companions had nothing to do with it, Job was free to decide what he wanted !

If suffering is guaranteed, how do we deal with the fear of something happening to loved ones or ourselves?

The promise of suffering shouldn’t add to our fear because it is a reality we all experience. Knowing God’s ability to use suffering for our good should deepen our love for him. It should empower us in the midst of trial and encourage us whatever comes our way. The promise of suffering is not a uniquely Christian idea—everyone knows we will suffer. What is unique about Christianity is the understanding that God can use suffering for our good and the good of others.

Thinking of the fact that if something happens we will be there to listen and to comfort and to help and to whatever necessary… sometimes just being there helps a lot !
