I've been thinking about this for the past 16 hours and need some serious advice. If you had an interview for a job that you desperately needed, and you thought you were best for the job, but didn't get it, is it wrong to message back the employer and try to find out why you didn't get the job? She responded back by saying I was on the shortlist, and if a position were to open up, I would "absolutely be considered." She also said to "please keep in touch." I've had so many failed interviews in the past, I don't know how real it is or if it's just another type of stuff they spur at you, trying to make you feel better not getting the job. The job would have been working with dogs, and as a psychology graduate, that's what I want to do, as I have a strong passion for them and there's a huge beneficial therapeutic approach with working with animals. So should I try and find out why I wasn't hired for the job? If so, how should I word it?

The only failed interview is one where you did not learn something about yourself. Years ago I was being interviewed for an inter-department position. I reviewed a book called "Interviews For Dummies" and studied it every night for a couple weeks. I did not get the position but was told by the interviewer that I performed the best that she had ever seen. The experience from that intense interview prepared me for an even higher paying position with more responsibilities. I beat out a lot of competition for that position.

The way I look at it, each interview prepares you for the next one. It is a jungle out there and you must be aggressive in your approach. By all means find out why you were not hired. Odds are you were qualified but there were many other qualified applicants as well. Don't take anything personal. I wish you the best in this endeavor.
