Chapter 3
Indwelling Presence
The Holy Spirit is the 3rd Person of the Holy Trinity, God the Holy Spirit. Jesus promised that God would send the Holy Spirit to all believers in the 14th Chapter of John.
John 14:26) But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
Regarding the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, Jesus said this would be also in Verses 16 and 17:
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
Receiving the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit is not to be confused with being baptized in with the Holy Spirit as stated by John the Baptist. John 1:33) And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.
The Apostle Paul reveals how believers receive the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit:
Acts 19:2) And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. 3) And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. 4) Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. 5) When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6) And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
To receive the indwelling presence, Sanctified believer(s) ...those already having the indwelling presence... praying and laying hands on the new believer. This receiving can occur at the time of the new believers conversion if one or more Sanctified Members of the Congregation pray and lay hands on the new believer as they kneel at the alter. However, not all Christians accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior in a Church setting. A person can become convicted, and repent of their sin filled life, and ask Christ into their hearts anywhere. If there isn't a Sanctified believer around, they will not receive the indwelling presence until one or more Sanctified believers pray and lay hands on them. Just as in the example from Acts.
The indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit is the Sanctification of the new believer. An excellent description of this process can be found here:
What is Sanctification? Bible Definition and Meaning
(excerpt)
From time to time human beings are commanded to sanctify themselves. For example, God commanded the nation of Israel, "consecrate to me every firstborn male" ( Exod 13:2 ). God said through Peter, "in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord" ( 1 Peter 3:15 ). One sanctifies Christ by responding to unbelievers meaningfully, out of a good conscience and faithful life. God calls his own to set themselves apart for that which he has set them apart. Sanctify, therefore, becomes a synonym for "trust and obey" ( Isa 29:23 ). Another name for this action is "consecration." To fail to sanctify God has serious consequences ( Num 20:12 ).
Human beings ultimately cannot sanctify themselves. The Triune God sanctifies. The Father sanctifies ( 1 Cor 1:30 ) by the Spirit ( 2 Thess 2:13 ; 1 Peter 1:2 ) and in the name of Christ ( 1 Cor 6:11 ). Yet Christian faith is not merely passive. Paul calls for active trust and obedience when he says, "Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God" ( 2 Cor 7:1 ). No one may presume on God's grace in sanctification. Peter reminds believers to be diligent in making their calling and election sure ( 2 Peter 1:10 ).
This sanctification is how the "carnal" believer is able to grow into the "spiritual" believer as spoken of by the Apostle Paul:
1 Corinthians 3:1) And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. 2) I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. 3) For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?
Through the indwelling presence is how Christians are able to grow in Christ to become mature believers, to grow towards being fully consecrated, to achieve a greater understanding of Scripture, and the receiving of Spiritual Gifts which the Holy Spirit dispenses as He will.
