Hey Everyone,

After seeing the "discussion" that broke out over our friend @Subhumanoidal and his username in the "Dark Attractions" thread, it got me thinking about how people perceive and react to the usernames we choose for ourselves.

To be honest, after watching that whole fiasco, what I REALLY wanted to title this thread was: "How Would People Here React If I Changed My Username to 'BigFatDoofus'?" But out of respect for this site, and knowing an outlandish title might be very off-putting to someone searching Google for a Christian forum, I am forced to keep my more ornery side under somewhat measured control (it's a full-time job, let me tell you.)

So before my inner goblin lets loose (that would be at least the 3rd time today, and it's only 9:30 in the morning,) let's talk about usernames!

* What is the origin of your username? Why did you choose it, and what does it mean to you?

I know many of us have explained our names more times than a kid on a road trip asks, "Are we there yet?!", but we always have newcomers here, so there's always an opportunity to re-introduce ourselves! :)

For whose who don't know...

Hi! I'm Seoulsearch, nice to meet you! :)

I am adopted, and my papers say I was found in a cardboard box in front of a theater in Seoul, Korea. I was adopted by loving, Christian, Caucasian parents -- and because of this, I have always been in-between everything, never fully fitting into one side or the other. When I was younger, I never knew who I was and was always searching for a place to belong. I am always in-between groups, labels, cultures, and classifications.

Over the years, I believe God has taught me that my calling is to be a bridge between different types of people. "Seoulsearch" represents my lifelong search to discover who I am, and my calling to help others find who they are in Christ as well.

Thank you for reading about me -- please tell us about the unique story behind YOUR name, and what it means to you! :)

* What are some alternative usernames you've considered or had over the years? What caused you to change them?

As a side note, I loved this suggestion in the Dark Attractions thread as an alternative play on Sub's name:

If you're open to suggestions in the case that you decide to make a change, I would like to submit the option Shuuboidalman. That sounds like someone that came out of the Marvel universe and would be very fitting of my regard for you. Although it is a vague memory of the exact circumstances of my having found myself in a sort of a rut, I remember you swooping in, in the form of a chicken, or something, and pulling me out of it.
So if @Subhumanoidal is actually an alias for Marvel's newest superhero -- ShuuBoidalMan!! -- does that mean he should have to wear a cape?! :D:cool::geek:

* And finally, what are some fun (family-friendly) but rather outlandish names you have considered for yourself, and why?

I truly have to laugh when anticipating the kinds of comments I KNOW I would get if I did indeed changed my username to "BigFatDoofus," but for obviously reasons, I shall restrain myself (it's hard.)

How about you? :D

This is copied from/part of a response I gave to BillyBob yesterday when he asked abut my name...

Yes, magenta is one of the primary colours ... the opposite of green, being comprised of equal parts red and blue. The name Magenta was given to me many many years ago by a very good friend because I wore a lot of purple and pinkish purples, and magenta is actually a very pink colour LOL and we never or rarely ever say purple at work when discussing the colour of a print or what colour we would like to add to the filtration to neutralize it. That friend is someone I worked with for about 17 years (until she passed away) and she 12 stepped me into the program of Alcoholics Anonymous... I remember being invited to a cake or 2 of hers before I ever got clean and sober, and at 1 of those meetings I was asked to share, and I just I got up to the podium and I had no idea what to say and I certainly wasn't going to say I was an alcoholic LOL. But at some point I did start going to meetings on my own because I loved listening to people talk about the conditions of their life, especially while I was seemingly incapable of identifying and articulating the depth and source of my pain. I also loved listening to people's God stories. Anyway yes we worked together for many years and at some point she was pretty much the only person who could (or would) listen to what was going on in my life at the time because it was so bad nobody else wanted to hear it. I think there was an element of people thinking I should just be able to fix myself ha ha. And then she really showed up for me at the end of 1992 when someone that I was really very close to suddenly passed away, which was quite a shock to so many people, and yet within the depths of my own self I knew that that person had been a gift to me from God who I did not believe in... It was a year and a half later when I cried out to that God I did not believe in for help... not asking for help to quit drinking and drugging, but that was the outcome after 24 years of abuse, because within days I was attending NA and lost the desire to use mind and mood altering substances.

For anyone who doesn't have the time or ability to look up the link, here is the original post:

I am lynx because a lynx is a nice balance. Not as muscle bound and slow as a tiger, not as hyper and insubstantial as a cheetah, not as helpless as a house cat.
Also a lynx has no interest in attacking humans. They are far too big to carry off and they smell bad too, mostly like the chemicals they put on themselves. If you walk through the woods and a lynx is in the neighborhood, you usually won't even know he is there. He would much rather stay in his tree, completely motionless, and wait until you trample on through.

I hope lots of people post on this thread. I'm sure curious about some! Mine's pretty self-explanatory, I think. Hope in Jesus alone!

Suze ( pronounced sooze ) is short for Suzanne and that's my name . The first Christian site I was on I called myself Jemima Pudleduck because I was nervous about putting my real name on the web . Everyone thought it was my real name 🙄 they obviously hadn't read any Beatrix Potter 🥴 .

I only have two nickname stories, and they both come from the old apostolic chat days. May it rust in peace.

When I first started chatting online I chose Psalm_97 because I liked that Psalm. A couple years later I dropped it and just used my name, isaac. One of the moderators kept calling me psalm right up until they closed the chat down. I said her brain had a very, very slow refresh rate.

At one time we had so many different Jennifer users that they struggled to find different unique names for themselves. Jennifer, Jenny, Jen, Jenn, Jennn, InJen, Ynnej...

Love the Puddleduck name! And Leonard Cohen's Suzanne was definitely a fave with me as I was learning to play guitar...

It's pretty much guaranteed that the name I meet someone under is the name I am going to call them to infinity and beyond.

Shoot, I may even still be calling people by their usernames in heaven, if it's allowed.

I think I met Lynx here on CC in 2014? Somewhere around there, and have been to 3 in-person meetups where he was present.

Whether online or in person, I still call him Lynx or Lynxsus (that's another hallmark of mine, adding my own flair to someone's username,) and most likely always will.

I have no idea who this "Isaac" person is, but I'm pretty sure he's a lot of trouble.

I've never read Beatrix Potter, but "PuddleDuck" would be an awesome username! :D

I'm going to change my avatar, again. I found a coloring app on my phone and colored this page that originally featured 3 balloons. I'll probably go back and edit so that the one balloon incorporates the three balloons to make one bigger balloon. I especially like it because it brings to mind a dream I remember from the age that I had a similar teddy bear (my cat smells like it so, I think it was from a time that cat fur might've been used to make teddy bears, considering that they also used cat paws to make 'rabbit's feet' charms). Leading up to my being carried up by a giant red balloon, I was trying to get away from the Frankenstein monster.
I will put this pic in this post since I was thinking of changing it to one of my latest pages and will probably do since I have just now read a comment that happened to say, albeit in a different context, exactly what it does. "Yes! you are." And of course, true to character I'll take that as a wink from God saying, 'go ahead, do it!'

Note to Self: The REAL way to get away from monsters is with a giant balloon (specifically red in color.)

Put this on your shopping list, immediately!

HA!

I actually do in my head -- you just don't see it. I have to force myself to think of your new name if I want to directly call you by name.

But the reason I make a conscious effort to use your current username when seen by everyone else is because I know an even bigger fuss will be made if people knew what your old name was!! Because plenty of people gave you grief about THAT name too, probably even more. (Plus, I consider your old name your own business and wouldn't use it without permission.)

Plus, if I just called you by your old name, can you imagine the riot that would start?!

LOL!! "SEOULSEARCH, WHY DID YOU JUST CALL SUB [insert your old name here]???!"

People would assume I'm an even bigger bully than what some have said I already am!

HOWEVER.

If you changed your name back to your old one, and I really did change my name to BigFatDoofus, we'd pretty much be even, and people would think we were just making fun of each other. :D

i almost used that as my username but tghankfully did not.
my later name for my self was enrilionor (lionora meaning beloved in elvish.)
