Love bombing

One thing that was mentioned in our fortnightly small group last night was encouraging us guys to get involved in being "partnered" up with a new Christian within the church to catch up with them, give them a call occasionally and see how they are doing, but I think this is different to the OP, it was the first I heard of it and I thought it was a good idea.

I received love bombing several times in various churches and it was always very unpleasant to me.

"Older ladies" are always in the first line, beware of them!

"Young ladies" will ignore you always... oh what a situation....

Men are usually behaving normally.

As an old lady, (okay, woman, because, once again, I ain't no lady lol), all I have to say is

Here's the thing. I went shopping today. Looking at the slim selection of sugar-free cookies, I saw a young man about four feet from me scanning product. (Not quite sure what they're doing, but I keep guessing "inventory.")

So, I asked him if he could take a suggestion for the store, and he said, "No."

Didn't want him to feel bad that he couldn't, so I joked around and told him I could give him some advice instead. He smiled.

I gave him that old joke from Steve Martin. "I can tell you how to make a million dollars, tax free."

Bigger smile, and "Okay."

"First, get a million dollars."

Huge smile and "Okay."

Then I told him, "Nah, that's it. Old joke." And we laughed before going back to what we were doing.

Is this odd? Most certainly. But I truly do like making people smile.

So, yupper. When a new person comes into the church and looks lost, (because sometimes they come in and look for friends), I go up to them and try to make them smile. Make them feel more at ease.

I did this when I was young. I did this when I was middle-aged. I don't do it now, only because I can't go to church anymore.

Is that love bombing? Yeah. Okay. If'n you want to find fault with anything churches do that you disagree with, you can certainly feel free to call it love bombing.

But not really my thing to pull apart church. To me, THAT is what I think church ladies do in the corner of the church and I don't think it edifies.

Watch out for the Jehovah Witness and the Mormons, they use love bombing as their campaign to convert people.

Every time they get around me they cannot wait to hit the road...their dogma is easily refuted and they are not that fond of scripture in context.....

Many lonely people seek to be with others at their local church, they are susceptible to love bombing. Many of them remember the attention they received and fear to leave. Even after the love bombing stops, and it does.

Lol, I've never heard of that before! I was actually a bit worried when I clicked on this; I thought you might be struggling with a love of bombing! Very different!

That sounds...well, wrong. I mean, it's one thing to extend a warm welcome, but to intentionally be overenthusiastic in one's welcome to manipulate people into staying, then just kind of ignoring the person or dropping the behavior when it's clear he/she's going to is disgenuine. I also feel it would be kind of creepy. I'd expect people to come up and say hi if I started going to a new church, but if they start asking me to go places with them or complimenting me on every single thing despite barely knowing me, that would drive me the other way...I've seen too many crime dramas to trust strangers who seem obsessed with me.

Love bombing is also a tactic used by narcissists. They bomb their intended victims to gain loyalty and exclusivity, then move on to more dangerous forms of treatment.

Much of the love bombing that church people do isn't intentional; it's broken people doing their best to be kind and friendly. Some of the cults do it intentionally, and some churches do it with good intent, but that doesn't make it a good practice.

As an introvert and observer type, I am less keen on being effusively welcomed if that's all there is. Friendliness with nothing behind it except, "Here's an offering envelope" isn't going to cut it. While I'm also the type to get involved in helping where I can, if I get the sense that someone just wants my practical involvement without being truly relational with me, I'll vote with my feet.
