I was thinking about this the other day, about how the word "merchandise" is used in both John 2 and 2 Peter 2.
"
13 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers [b]doing business. 15 When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers’ money and overturned the tables. 16 And He said to those who sold doves, “Take these things away! Do not make My Father’s house a house of merchandise!” 17 Then His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house [c]has eaten Me up.”
18 So the Jews answered and said to Him, “What sign do You show to us, since You do these things?”
19 Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
20 Then the Jews said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?”
21 But He was speaking of the temple of His body. 22 Therefore, when He had risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this [d]to them; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had said."

"2 But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. 2 And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3 By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction [a]does not slumber."

I included the NKJV translation of 2 Peter 2, but it's the KJV that has the word "merchandise" in it. (The NKJV uses the word "exploit" as shown above.)
I can think of two possible ways that "My Father's house" can be interpreted. Or it could be a dual interpretation:
1. The physical temple that existed during Jesus' time
2. The Church (both Jewish and Gentile believers)
The reason I bring this up is because I'm wondering if Jesus was referring to believers in Him when He said "Do not make My Father's house a house of merchandise!". Because elsewhere in Scripture, we are told that God does not live in temples or buildings made by human hands. And perhaps there's a parallel between the "merchandising" that Jesus denounced and the "merchandising" that Peter referred to.
Now I realize that the Church as we know it didn't exist until after the resurrection of Christ. In short, I'm thinking that perhaps the merchandising that Jesus was talking about is spiritual in the same sense as was described by Peter.
