They are planning on colonizing Mars and sending the first team, (one way) within the next 11 years. If you were a colonist and they were giving you everything they thought you needed, but you could take whatever fitted into a backpack, what would it be, what would it be?

Personally, i think all the seeds necessary to grow the plants to make chocolate are a high priority.
 
I'll ask for a teleporter to retreat back to Earth if aliens attack.

colonize? Now how are they gonna populate Mars wearing those gaudy spacesuits?
 
tricorder, replicator, phaser, com badge, and a command gold uniform to remind the rest of the party of their place on the mission.

Personal devices and computer link back to earth. Lots of veggie seeds, my flute and medical supplies.

Seriously, I am not sure I am the right person for this honour. I think I prefer my blue jewel, third rock from the sun!

Best answer, don't know who would do this on their own will but some people can be hyped up to do just about anything.
 
Good luck with that imagine the poor saps who will take that one way ticket when the oxygen generator breaks down or they run out of food because the supply ship exploded on entry......As a nation we are about done and to be quite frank...this trip will never come to fruition!
 
I would take a video recorder with lots of internal memory, a mortar and pestle, lots of brushes, Bible for sure, a set of awesome loungewear, and all the pics of my family and earth that I could fit. Jammed pack! I'll steal the chocolate seeds idea too.

They better send music as a necessity. That would be the hardest because I'm no musician.
