MELODIES that make you feel sad

So alot of the time, when people talk about "sad music" they really like, the "sad" part they are referring to is the lyrics of the music. Now dont get me wrong, Im not here to put down these people : p But with music, it has ALWAYS been the melodies that I focus on, and feel something for. In all honesty, with most music I like, I couldnt even tell you one line of the lyrics of the song : p Ive always enjoyed the sound of music, the flowing melodies and rhythm, and how every instrument comes together to form something. Its really great.

And the sound of music can really affect my mood and feelings, too. Like most people, I enjoy music that brings out those "sad" feelings. Its pleasing to be moved like that by sound.

I have noticed in life that everyone has a different opinion on sound, whats good and whats not good, how a certain song affects them, ect. I think its really interesting actually. I understand not everyone would like what I like, but I enjoy talking about it anyway.

So, I was wondering. What songs, by their melodies alone, bring about those "sad" feelings for you? You dont have to post instrumental music exclusively btw : p It can have lyrics, but I wanna know how the melody affects you.

text can be as sad as can be, but it isn't sad with a joyful upbeat melody. Actually I almost never listen to sad songs anymore. I did when I needed to cry. Randy Newman has some genius sad songs.

Randy Newman, I never would have thought he could be a composer of sad music : p I will have to check that out.

I generally dont listen to piano exclusively music, but its definitely a great instrument for bring out emotions in people : p Its definitely something I turn to when I feel the need for that kind of music.
 
being the bass guitar nerd I am, I wanna make my first post a bass guitar song : p There are people out there who dont know the kinda things you can do with a bass guitar, it can be beautiful too.

I'm into guitars lol.. a song I like from Joe Satriani "the forgotten" in this instrumental song Joe plays with a lot of emotion, in my opinion could be tagged a sad song.

I had to look this one up, havent heard it before : p But, theres alot I like about it. The singing style isnt my kind of music, but the music itself is really nice. I love minimalistic music, and I really appreciated the piano and drum playing together. I also really liked the back up singers, for some reason : p Lately Ive been finding myself more appreciative of back up singers, though : p

I definitely liked it more than I thought I would : p

Im currently listening to part one of the forgotten, and the first minute of it, haha I was thinking about how it would affect my emotions, and I while listening to just the first minute of it I was imaging like video gamey stuff from the late 80s-early 90s, and realized it made me feel more excited than anything : p after the first minute I realize how it could make you feel that way though, the long drawn out notes definitely feel soulful and deep. And I like the intensity it reaches after 2 minutes, is way cool.

I'm the opposite of you. I'm into lyrics. The only thing that music does is make the lyrics really pound in. (Exception to that rule -- U2. I cannot get over how stingingly deep my understanding of "A Street with no name" digs into me when Bono sings that, and yet...? So what? A street with no name? Who cares, if you go by lyrics only. lol)

But I also have an opposite problem, when the lyrics dig in deep to a sad song, it lifts me up and makes me happier, not sadier.

Always reminds me of Neil Diamond's, "Song Sung Blue."

Eleanor Rigby - Beatles

Believe it or not I'm not a huge fan of The Beatles but something about their play on lyrics truly gets to me.
