Throwing billion of dollars at Ukraine was a disaster, but also meant to ruin the USA, which is deeply in debt. Sending all that military hardware to Ukraine did nothing except undermine the US defense capability.
And all of this because the West desperately wanted a PROXY WAR with Russia. Which was idiotic to begin with.
Russia was never a threat to Western Europe, when Putin's primary goal was to restore "the Russian empire" (of which Ukraine was a part before). Had America and Europe stayed out of this conflict (since there were no national interests at risk for either entity), Ukraine would have been compelled to negotiate peace and also give up some territory.
What everyone conveniently forgets is that after Crimea was annexed in 2014 (with the blessings of Obama), Ukraine and all of Eastern and Northern Europe could have made a proper defense alliance for themselves and ignored NATO. That would have totally discouraged Russia from going after any of these countries: Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Ukraine. Belarus is a staunch ally of Russia. But all of Scandinavia could have also helped them to set up an eastern defense barrier along Russia's western border.
Hard to say. It's not Biden holding things up as far as I can tell. Republicans are the fly in the ointment for now.
Yeah, a little gun shy after learning that billions of dollars given to Ukraine was laundered back the US via FTX and given to political campaigns to get people elected. For some strange reason, there are a lot of Republicans who are not interested in passing spending bills that use money laundry to fund their opponents campaigns.
Ukrainians initially welcomed German forces in WW2. They wanted freedom from the oppressive Russian regime. Some Ukrainians joined the German military, including as prison camp guards. Germany could have had Ukraine as an ally.
People seem to forget the security guarantees offered to Ukraine in order for them to more or less demilitarise. They gave up their nukes and returned a lot of hardware, including their bomber force, to Russia. Partly this was to pay debts the newly independent Ukraine owed Russia. It also left Ukraine weak militarily. It's no wonder that much of the world distrusts America. Promises are good until the next election. Europe's mistake was to allow Putin to annex Crimea. He should have been pushed out there and then. Sanctions demonstrate that it is not all that hard to get around sanctions. North Korea has a nuclear arsenal, Iran has sophisticated missiles and a strong military and Russia uses electronics made in Taiwan and America in their missiles and military drones. And too many in power refused to believe that Putin was lying when he said that he did not plan to invade Ukraine. The intelligence community was sure that he was lying. People believe what they want to believe. And that has led to another catastrophic war. "History teaches us that we learn nothing from history."

There is nothing new about misuse of taxpayer's money. International aid to Gaza is not audited and has made Hamas leaders filthy rich while enabling their military build up and tunnel construction. Money given to the UN pays for "peacekeepers" who do nothing. I've seen photos of UN food aid being sold in supermarkets in Egypt. Corruption is everywhere. It's about time that the US pulled funding from the UN. They are little but parasites, a mouthpiece for the enemies of democracy. Ukraine is a drop in the bucket compared to the UN.

Contributions were made to members of both U.S. political parties. In 2022, Bankman-Fried provided initial financial support for Protect Our Future PAC. Protect Our Future was launched as a political action committee of the Democratic Party with $10 million in initial funding aiming to support "lawmakers who play the long game on policymaking in areas like pandemic preparedness and planning", according to Politico.[129] Bankman-Fried donated $27 million in total to this PAC.[130]
Donations to Republican Party campaigns in the 2021–22 cycle have been estimated at $262,200,[131] including donations to senators Susan Collins of Maine, Mitt Romney of Utah, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Ben Sasse of Nebraska.[126] Journalist Matthew Kassel says that Bankman-Fried had often donated to politicians who cultivate good Israel–United States relations but concluded "it is unclear if his backing of pro-Israel candidates was coincidental or motivated by any personal interest in Middle East policy."[132]

Bankman-Fried was the second-largest individual donor to Democratic causes for the 2022 U.S. elections, with total donations of $39.8 million, only behind George Soros,[134][135][136] of which $27 million was given to the Protect Our Future PAC.[130][137][138] Additional recipients included The Next 50 PAC, Guarding Against Pandemics PAC, and the leadership PAC for Brendan Boyle.[17][139][140] Bankman-Fried said in February 2022 that his political contributions were not aimed at influencing his policy goals for the cryptocurrency ecosystem; however, FTX was circulating a list of suggestions to policymakers at the time.[126] He said in an interview that he would prefer the Commodity Futures Trading Commission take a larger role in regulating and guiding the crypto industry.[126] According to The New York Times, the CFTC has a reputation for favoring relatively relaxed regulations for the industry when contrasted with other regulators like the Securities and Exchange Commission.[141]
Bankman-Fried pushed for regulations via the proposed Digital Commodities Consumer Protection Act (DCCPA) by extensively lobbying Congress, which was perceived as being favorable to FTX but harmful to the broader industry, especially its decentralized finance competitors.[142][143][144] In May 2022, Bankman-Fried stated that he planned to spend "north of $100 million" in the 2024 presidential election with a "soft ceiling" of $1 billion.[145] In October 2022, he walked back his pledged spending, calling it a "dumb quote on my part".[146] However, in Going Infinite, Michael Lewis revealed that Bankman-Fried had begun to investigate the legality of directly paying Donald Trump not to run for president in 2024, with Trump's team allegedly giving a potential figure of $5 billion.[59]
In the aftermath of the FTX scandal, recipients of Bankman-Fried's and other FTX executives' political campaign contributions have been donating equal amounts to charitable organizations. Elected officials doing so include Senator Kirsten Gillibrand,[147] as well as Representatives Chuy García and Kevin Hern.[148] A spokesperson for former Texas gubernatorial candidate Beto O'Rourke said that his campaign had received a $1 million donation from Bankman-Fried in October 2022, but returned the funds in early November, prior to the election.[149]
