I was saved in the 1970's. There was a lot going on in the Church in Australia. The Charismatic movement was gathering steam, many high profile preachers were visiting and many were coming to Christ.

It seemed that God was restoring truths to the Church that had been ignored. One of those truths was "Body Ministry". The church I attended embraced this truth. For a time. The pastor was a controller and that created some serious issues. Many people left, including myself.

By Body Ministry I mean that all believers have some kind of gift from God. All believers should be able to contribute to a meeting in some way.

"What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together, everyone has a psalm or a teaching, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. All of these must be done to build up the church." 1 Corinthians 14:6

Romans 12:3-8
"For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but think of yourself with sober judgment, according to the measure of faith God has given you. Just as each of us has one body with many members, and not all members have the same function, 5so in Christ we who are many are one body, and each member belongs to one another.

We have different gifts according to the grace given us. If one’s gift is prophecy, let him use it in proportion to his faith; if it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is giving, let him give generously; if it is leading, let him lead with diligence; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully."

All of these must be done to build up the church......... If you want to know why your church is struggling to retain members, you have your answer. Many drift from fellowship to fellowship, seeking fulfillment that rarely comes. While the congregation languishes, Pastors are overloaded and undervalued.

Where I attend is typical. Every now and again, someone has a testimony to share. And that's about it.

The pastor is one of the more pragmatic men I've met. He does not enslave himself to the congregation. He takes holidays that are due to him. However, he also gets an outsider to minister while he is away. This is not biblical. There are about 60 regulars. Many of them are competent to share the Word.

I've not shared my thoughts on this with him as yet. I need to have some credibility first.

Brethren, this is not for the fainthearted. There are risks of false doctrine, division, jealousy and pride rising up. However, obeying God's principles most certainly will be rewarded. For sure the current model of church has failed.

In my opinion, the entire Bible shows us how all men fail no matter who they are, which is why I think God/Jesus/Holy Spirit incorporated a plan where He does all of the saving Himself regardless of what men do. THIS IS precisely why more and more Christians are being made everyday, even when it looks like churches themselves are failing.

My A.I. is better at describing this in more detail than I can...

God the Father initiates the entire plan of salvation by sending His Son into the world (John 3:16) and pouring out the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:33). He bears witness to Jesus in several ways:
  • Through the voice from heaven: At Jesus' baptism and at the Transfiguration, the Father declared, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased" (Matthew 3:17; 17:5).
  • Through Jesus' works: "The works that the Father has given me to finish, the very works that I am doing, testify that the Father has sent me" (John 5:36).
  • Through the Scriptures: "The Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me"(John 5:37) -- the Old Testament prophets and writings point to Christ (John 5:39).
    • Matthew 16:17 - "And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven."
  • Through John the Baptist: The Father used John as His herald to announce the coming of the Messiah (John 5:33-35).
The Father's testimony is the foundational, authoritative witness upon which all others rest.

Jesus Secures Salvation Through His Atoning Work

Jesus
is the central subject of salvation, having secured pardon for sinners through His death, burial, and resurrection. He is the one who came by water and blood (1 John 5:6), providing the objective evidence of His atoning work. As the primary witness, Jesus revealed Himself to be fully God with saving power, and His vindication/justification is applied to believers through the Spirit. The Holy Spirit points to Jesus, ensuring that the message of the gospel is not just intellectual information but a saving reality.

The Holy Spirit Applies Salvation Through Internal and External Witness

The Holy Spirit acts as the agent who applies Jesus' work to individuals, performing three critical witnessing roles:

  • Conviction: The Spirit convicts the lost of their sin, exposing its heinousness and leading them to repentance so they may believe in Christ's salvation.
  • Illumination: The Spirit bears witness to the truth of Jesus Christ, illuminating the hearts of hearers so they can see and believe the gospel, which human testimony alone cannot achieve (John 15:26).
  • Assurance: The Spirit testifies with the believer's spirit that they are children of God, providing assurance of salvation by producing the fruits of the Spirit and awakening heartfelt cries of "Abba, Father" and "Jesus is Lord" (Romans 8:16).
Empowered Testimony for Global Witness

Believers are empowered by the Holy Spirit to be witnesses of Jesus to the world. The Spirit provides the power, boldness, and right words needed to proclaim the gospel, as seen when the disciples were filled with the Spirit at Pentecost. This empowerment ensures that the church can effectively share the good news of salvation, relying on the Spirit's supernatural ability to transform hearts and bring people to faith in Jesus.

Together, the Father, Son, and Spirit form a threefold divine witness (1 John 5:6-8) -- an unassailable, unified testimony that God saves His people through Christ.

I see three problem areas with churches, personalities, doctrines, and structure. Perhaps the least appreciated in structure. Running a church as an organizational system imprints a mechanical aspect to Christianity such that people can be seen as components to be processed.

The head pastor model can also have an inhibiting effect such that people resist doing anything that is not approved and for which they might get yelled at. I visited a church and talked with an elderly lady many years ago. I asked her how she was doing financially and she said she was having some difficulty. We were able to help a little, but what was sad that even her best frind of 30 years from the church did not know she was struggling. I am sure the church leaders would have been mad that she did not let them know. However, this structure tends to cause people to inhibit themselves.
