I guess I will get the ball rolling with a statement of sorrow and regret. I was an only child and lost my father when I was 5 years old. While my mother loved me, she was not into physical expressions of love; nor verbal expressions for that matter. She was too busy doing the things she had to do to keep food on the table and a roof over our heads.
I had 6 aunts and uncles on my mom's side, and several close cousins on my father's side. When I was younger we stayed in contact with them and even visited them on occasion. One cousin, in particularly, helped me a lot in my early adulthood when I was recovering from a sudden, unexpected (by me) divorce. I always enjoyed their company, and the feeling of being part of a family.
However, as the years went by, I became more and more distant from all my relatives. I made no effort to contact them, and in one instance, to my great shame, I ignored an attempt by a relative to establish contact with me. As time went by, I lost all contact with any of my relatives. I pretty much ignored the fact that I had relatives at all.
I have now reached the twilight of my life and I cannot begin to tell you how saddened I am by the situation I find myself in. I sincerely regret my actions and wish that I could re-establish contact with whatever relatives are still living. However, it is not necessarily easy to locate them.
In summary, I urge you to cherish your family; all members close or distant. Stay in contact, and do whatever you can with them, whenever you can. I believe that God intends for man to be a social being. So, value those relationships and make them a priority just lower than your relationship with Jesus Christ.
God bless you all.
