Best advice I can give is to attend a church that expounds the bible and seeks to practise what it preaches.

Ask the minister about the books of the Bible he is currently preaching his way through.
Then ask about leadership accountability.
How would he deal with a claim that an elder touched a child inappropriately, or a claim of embezzlement?
Anything other than total openness walk away.
