John 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. "
I have newly discovered the fascinating story of Naaman in 2 Kings.
Naaman as a wealthy, powerful man in the Syrian Kingdom of Aram. He was the Army Commander and second in power only to the King. But Naaman had a serious problem. He had leprosy.
The OT word leprosy is a translation of the Hebrew word tzara’at. This is a word for any skin disease in the ancient world. More; for an Israelite tzara’at was a visible indication of some unforgiven and hidden inward sin. A person with tzara’at was “unclean” and thus excluded from all social contact until the sin was forgiven. This was a terrible experience.
Now an Israelite servant girl told Naaman that Elisha, the prophet of Israel, could cure his disease. The King of Aram gave Naaman permission to seek the Prophet of even though Aram and Israel were traditional enemies.
When Naaman encountered Elisha he was told to immerse himself seven times in the Jordan River and he would become clean. Naaman scoffed at this idea, but was persuaded by loyal servants. Naaman entered the water and dunked himself under seven times, coming out of the water “clean” with fresh, healthy skin.
Naaman went back to Elisha proclaiming his faith. “There is no God in all the world but the God of Israel.” He then asked for two donkey loads of Israel soil to take back to Damascus so that he could stand on Israel soil and worship the true God. He made one more request, to be forgiven for helping his master when the King bowed down to his god Rimmon and needed help getting up. Elisha’s answer? Shalom…go in peace…don’t worry about that.
So; more than eight hundred years before Christ an uncircumcised gentile man, in faith, dunks himself into Israel’s living water, without saintly help, without prayers, and without proclaiming Yeshua his lord and savior, and yet becomes a child of God.
Clearly no one comes to the Father except through Jesus Christ. No argument. We just cannot become so arrogant to think we know all the ways Our Lord saves.
