If you are going to conform to only one standard or one thing that the Lord Jesus Christ wants you to do.... I would choose to be a disciple because it encompasses more than just one thing to do and it covers all areas of your life. Just a thought.
2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
In context Mat 7 is part of the Olivet discourse and is kingdom principal. So the question becomes if we are to correctly understand this passage we must consider if it is speaking to individuals or to nations.
I do not think that Mat 7 is asking the same question that you are asking.

The Pharisees added a lot of man-made commandments, and I think people still do that today. It confuses things terribly.
since this is said near the end of Matthew chapter 7, and from Matthew chapter 5 to this point He has been teaching, how about, contextually, He is talking about all the things He literally had just said?
and even closer to the context, He talks of many people coming to Him talking about all their good works done in His name, even miraculous ones, but He rejects them saying I never knew you -- so primarily, the will of God is that you believe, and believing, be known by Him, and know Him?
so perhaps the question is not "which works?" ((and the work of God is to believe, John 6:29, and His will that all who believe should not be lost but have eternal life, John 6:39-40))
but the question is, "how to be known by Him?"
because the ones rejected, again, are not those who did not do good works and keep commandments. it is those who He "never knew"
the one who hears His words and keeps them is like the wise man who builds his house on a rock.
