I thought for sure that this thread was more recently active. I'm surprised it's been dormant since July

I hope you get your new keyboard installed soon, Tourist.
It arrived today from Amazon so I'm ready to rock and roll. The other option was to buy a new laptop for $1000 so I went with the cheaper option of $18. A little awkward using an old fashion keyboard with a laptop but I will get used to it. The computer is less than 3 years old. Darlene says that the keyboard died from eating food when on the laptop and crumbs and stuff gummed up the keys.

Do people take M and Ms for pain?

How do you stop the dentists reminding you to pay up or visit them. I want the tooth fairy to pay them.
Shall I just reply to them get in touch with the tooth fairy first and then I might see you?
Advil's look like red M & M's and are advanced medicine for pain. At least that's the advertising claim. That's what I take. The tooth fairy idea paying dentist bills actually has merit.

Good to hear you're back in business :D

If it's just a few keys on the laptop you can pop/pry them off and clean up the area with a q-tip and alcohol to get any sticky stuff, then pop the key back on. I've fixed a few keys like that in the past that have stopped working.

Also, you can turn the laptop upside down (with it open and off) and shake all the crumbs out.

I am going to give that a try. Thanks for the helpful tip.

At this time I will not go into details on why I have stopped smoking but will only say that it is now been 4 days since my last cigarette.

Now, I still love to smoke but, at least for today, I chose not to. Tomorrow I will have to make another decision.

Quitting has caused much mental anguish for sure.

Smoking has always been a source of strife in our marriage as my wife lost both of her parents due to smoking by the age of 12. She never smoked but grew up surrounded by second-hand smoke. At least when I did smoke I smoked outdoors. Of course, my clothes always smelled like smoke and my breath like an ashtray. So it goes.

My name is Jerry and I am an addict. Nicotine is my drug of choice. But not today and by the grace of God not tomorrow either. I will not take if further than that. The pain is real and so is the struggle. It's best not to think to far ahead.

hmm. Is smoking outdoors kinda like drinking indoors. More acceptable? Or the other way round?
If nobody sees ya, it didnt happen.

Personally, I don't see that habit of smoking, whether indoors or outdoors to be acceptable. The same is true for alcohol addiction. Yeah, if a tree hits the ground in a forest and there is nobody around to hear it fall then it does not make a sound.

My mom used to make her own pesticide by soaking tobacco in water for several days. Sprayed it on her tomato plants. Seemed to be effective. Regarding the cigarettes in the roasted potatoes. It probably would not improve the taste but perhaps the spuds would become addictive.

arent spuds addictive on their own anyways?

You could use colored Sharpies to draw little faces on the smokes. Cigarette butts may make for good addition to a compost pile. Probably give the worms a needed boost too. Yes, spuds on their own can be addictive. Now I have a craving for french fries.

Potatoes are natural pain relievers. They have anti inflammatory properties. They are good for you skin, they can heal wounds and prevent infections, They can treat burns. Prevent rust, shine your shoes and clean your windows.

All hail the potato!
Make sure you eat at least one a day.

I bought some shredded hash browns and tater tots at Walmart this morning so I'm all set on natural pain relievers. I'm getting old so the rust prevention is an important attribute for me. I think I'll stick with the Windex for cleaning the windows though.

DAY ONE
It has been 4 weeks since I quit smoking, Or may 5 weeks but certainly more than 3 weeks. I forget.

OK, since the day I quit I have bought several packs of L & M's and a couple BIC lighters. Had a few smokes on the sly, here and there, mostly during my morning runs to Walmart for groceries or at the laundry mat.

Now, I really didn't smoke each cigarette in each pack. Always felt guilty about having lied to my wife whether I was still smoke free or not. The thing about addicts is that they tend to lie about their habit to those that they really and truly love.

It all started with the fire on the couch outside on our carport of our new home we recently moved into. Seems I didn't fully extinguished the butt and tossed it into a small box that I used as an ash tray. Yeah, I get it. Using a box as an ashtray was not the smartest thing to do. Neither was the decision to start smoking at the age of 13. It caught the rest of the butts on fire which then caught the bamboo couch on fire. My stepdaughter noticed the fire first. I went outside and flipped the blazing couch off the carport and put the fire out with pots of water. Left 2 large scorch marks on the dead grass which are still there but covered with the recent snowfall and ice storm. In the spring the new grass will grow and the scorched earth will be no more.

The fire scared my wife and rightly so I must add, because it could have caught the entire house on fire. She said that if the house had caught on fire or if the fire had started at night when we were asleep that we could have burned to death. Also, if this was not a sign from God that I had to quit smoking then what was? I threw out a lighter, 2 full packs of smokes and a partial pack. Next morning, going through the trash I only found the partial pack and my lighter. She missed those two items as she sifted through the trash that night while I was sleeping as she knew I would scrounge through the trash in the morning while she was still sleeping.

I bought my last pack about 10 days ago and another lighter, this time a mini BIC as I knew that this tiny little lighter would be sufficient. A few days later I told her about my relapse and tossed the few remaining smokes in the trash. For good. That was 5 days ago.

Oh, did I mentioned that addicts tend to lie?

I made a resolution to not lie anymore, especially to my wife. Been going with the nicotine lozenges. They help somewhat but it is not quite the same. Better than nothing.

I think about smoking a lot but, by the grace of God I do not intend to start up again. No more lies. Save some money. Live better and healthier if that is any consolation.

I pray that one day I will not have anymore mental aguish by mourning the loss of my precious nicotine habit. I now live each day one at a time. Today, even though I love smoking I choose not to smoke. Going to save money. Live better. And healthier. It is my only consolation.

No lie.

I'm glad you've decided to quit. Thing is, if you do sneak one, at any time, it's just going to be as hard as It first was to stop. It begins that special kind of pain all over again. "Hey ole buddy!" It says. "Missed ya" It says with a wry little smile. And It will take you back by the throat to the title of your post. "Day One" is "It"s name and It has many.

One other thing you should know. It knows you. It knows when you're the weakest. It will surprise you when you least expect It. It will come visit in three days when you think the worst is over. It will come calling in a month, and here's the horror. It will be back in a year. A smell will invite It. A meal. A cup of coffee. A fishing trip.

Don't go into this blind. It is very strong because It...... is you.

You hit the nail on the head and your estimate is right on target. I have had quite a few Day One's throughout the years. By the grace of God I will make it to Day Two. It is at that point that the healing will begin. You are right in that special kind of pain once again too. I am an addict. Nicotine is my drug of choice. But not today. At this point Day Two seems far away.

Step One

Is admitting you have a problem and I am glad that you decided to come clean on CC and I invite all who read this to please pray for Tourist that the cravings would be minimal and that God would take the desire to smoke away.

It was a wicker love seat with a large cushion sitting on the carport. The blaze was trying to reach the ceiling of the carport and the cushion was gone burnt up and there were only a few small pieces of an entire loveseat thrown away in the trash. A piece of furniture that took up about four and a half feet by two feet and probably 25 to 30 inches tall gone burnt up by a blazing fire. That scared me to my core. We only have two exits that are on the same end of the house close to the carport. Our bedroom windows are small and higher up I honestly don't think I could get out one even in a fire. It might have been the last smoke of the night, we might have been in bed. God in His mercy allowed it to be in the day and we were able to take control and put the fire out. Pray he will never want to pick up a cigarette again. I don't want any more family to die because of them. I HATE cigarettes. I LOVE my husband.

Thank you for taking STEP ONE.
