My Peace I Give You,
Jesus is in the early stages of imparting upon the
apostles the fate that is soon to come to Him. He
is trying to reassure them that everything will be
ok but early on they are not buying it. First of all
they have a hard time trying to figure out where He
is going, why He's going there and what might
happen when He gets there. He convinces them
to a point that the Holy Spirit will come to them and
be their comforter. Do not let your hearts be troubled
Jesus says to them. At first blush it sounds like they
are all stunned and don't understand. The entire
concept is unbelievable to them. As a believer I take
a little time to put myself there. I am a Jew and I am
tied to the law and Jesus comes and blows my mind.
I believe but yet I have reservations. I know the law
that has been drilled into me and now Jesus comes
to try to reassure them that He will die for them and
all but not to worry because He will rise again. It is easy
all these years later to be critical of the apostles but
we need to realize their world is being turned upside
down. So even after the crucifixion they were not
sure of things and it was with time that eventually they
understood. The question is: do we believe and do
we understand. It's a question to ponder and a
question to resolve
