(CNN) -- A random act of violence has left a promising 22-year-old college baseball player dead, a family devastated and two countries half a world apart rattled.
Christopher Lane, who's from Australia, was gunned down in Duncan, Oklahoma, while he was out jogging last week. The motive, police say? Three teens who had nothing better to do.
"They witnessed a young man run by on the street. Chose him as the target," Police Chief Danny Ford told CNN
When police eventually arrested the three teens -- ages 15, 16 and 17 -- one of them offered up a motive that made clear that Lane, who attended East Central University on a baseball scholarship, was chosen at random.
"He said the motive was, 'We were going to kill somebody,'" Ford told Australian radio station 3AW.
"They decided all three of them were going to kill somebody."
Police say the teens shot Lane in the back in the town of about 24,000 and sped away in their car.
"There were some people that saw him stagger across the road, go to a kneeling position and collapse on the side of the road," Ford told KSWO.
Attempts to revive Lane failed.
Police caught the teens a few hours after the shooting. Thanks to security cameras from local businesses, police saw their car speeding down the street.
Nearly 10,000 miles away in Australia, Lane's family struggled to cope with the news.
"He's left his mark as we know, and you know there's not going to be any good come out of this, because it was just so senseless," Christopher's father, Peter Lane, said. "It's happened. It's wrong, and we're just trying and deal with it the best we can."
Lane's girlfriend Sarah Harper posted an emotional tribute on Facebook, saying "you will always be mine and in a very special and protected place in my heart."

That just sickens me. It just makes my stomach turn. These young kids shoot someone, kill someone's brother/son/boyfriend because they were BORED?

Nowhere is safe anymore. You can't even take a jog in your neighborhood because someone might shoot you out of boredom.

I'm not for or against guns because I have mixed feelings about them and I'm not trying to debate you, but I really don't think you can blame this on guns. If their motive was they were going to just kill someone then I think if they didn't have the gun they would have used other means, like using their vehicle.

Perhaps the long term solution is to do away with this mindset of "If it feels good then do it", that really took hold in the 60s, and get people back to God.

Apparently there is mention somewhere if you know they are black. Although, I really don't see why it matters. I can not believe that in 2013 we still can not get past the color of someones skin. It's freaking crazy.

And yes, they were not merely bored. They were angry. Very angry with white people in particular.

Their race isn't a relevant factor, but their motivation- hatred of other races certainly is and that is what is going unreported. We will not see a crusade for or cries for justice concerning this man's life from the left. Why? It would not be politically advantageous to do so and ideology dictates in the big scheme of things his life was not worth very much anyway.

There is speculation from some tweets of the murderers that could point to a racial motive, but so far nothing concrete in that area......

Well the article that was posted has a video with their pictures at the top so I figured people would have sense enough to tell which ethnicity the teens belonged too. Guess I was giving people more credit than they deserved. :/

Why is skin color such a big deal for you? You know I would think on a Christian site we could avoid the whole race issue, but I guess that's apart of the original sin/fallen nature. I would work on your racial issues if I were you because I can assure you Heaven won't be segregated because God loves all His children no matter what color they are. Also, remember there is only one race and that is the human race.

The law abiding people will turn them in.
The law breakers will turn them in.

Then no one will have guns.
Simple see!

Some people with twisted, darkened minds think that if you passed such a law, law breakers wouldn't turn in their guns, and then the law abiding people would be left pretty much defenseless against them. People who reason like this are clearly darkened in their understanding. Law breakers follow the law, and they would NEVER EVER take advantage of a scenario where they'd have the upper hand against law abiding people without guns.

Its not conservatives that see race in every issue involving a minority.

The media touted the Zimmerman case as a case of race. The liberal elite of hollywood. The attoney general who arrested Zimmerman without evidence and witheld evidence from the defence team because of pressure they received from those who thought this was about race.

The media who seeks to cover up black on white crime but builds up white on black crime. Yes I know Zimmerman is hispanic but to the racist left in this country, any non-black is a potential target of their racisms.

Again when the truth of the bigotry of the left is exposed, their response? To call conservatives bigots.

Just another fyi? Conservatism can exist if racism dies, not true with liberalism.

I said once that there was no evidence, yet, of racism in this case, though the tweets of these teens certainly contained that possibility. If Zimmerman had made those same tweets, he would be dead.
