I read this book Stolen Innocence: My Story of Growing Up in a Polygamous Sect, Becoming a Teenage Bride, and Breaking Free of Warren Jeffs by Elissa Wall. If you really want to know what it's like inside a polygamous marriage, you should read it. Now, she never was one of multiple wives, but her mother was the second of three wives. And then her mother was reassigned to another man who already had... I can't remember how many wives. She gave what I thought was a very balanced account of the complicated relationship between her mom and her father's first wife. It's like both wives thought the other was the husband's favourite and they really didn't understand each other. She was interviewed by Oprah and then on another show, Oprah visited... I think it was the same compound. The wives there insisted that they were happy and didn't get jealous and stuff, but after reading that book I wouldn't trust those people to be honest. If they were unhappy or jealous, they wouldn't admit it to anyone let alone on camera. I always knew that being a woman in the FLDS must be really tough, but the book made it sound like was bad for the men too. They're under a lot of pressure to keep their family under control. At risk was loosing everything. They believe that a man needs at least 3 wives to get into the highest level of heaven. That means that 2/3 of the men would be kicked out for not being good enough, or more likely, not being obedient enough to the leadership.
