What would be REALLY great...is if we never gave into the temptations in the first place. Our moments of choice in the temptations of our lives are the gateways to things like addiction. In may ways, we either give into our weaknesses (lust, gluttony, ext...), or we try to escape our problems/pain through vices. This, btw, never works. (...nuh-uh...I mean, I drank and forgot and..."Yeah, and the next day?" Oh...*coughs* "Glad we had this chat...")

So, Porn, though a problem, has it's roots in us. It's our lust and greed that make the market for porn what it is. Really, those can boil down to selfishness when you think about it. Man, eliminating selfishness sure would resolve a multitude of issues... Anyway, I speak these things not as one trying to be right over others, but out of my experience within my own life, and other's.

The only hope we have is Christ. Always has been. Always will be. We can't do this alone. Stay strong in The Lord and the power of His might. If we stand with Him, and through Him, with each other, then though we may stumble, we'll never fall.

The following comment isn’t about defending porn or condemning it. It’s ONLY relevancy is to discuss porn in its relationship to Mathew Chapter 5, AND THAT’S ALL this comment is about.

I never intended this to be my first contribution to a post. I was on my way to the “introduce yourself as a newbie” section, and I saw this one.


One of the strange things about this issue of porn (and I mean pornography, not obscenity), is that the human mind is capable of rationalizing nearly anything to suit its interests, and the male mind, if it wanted to, can turn most anything into pornography. When they were big about a decade ago, Victoria's Secret would send us a catalog every two weeks. (Well, to my wife, and not “us”. Ha!) I would bring it to her and say, “Here’s my bi monthly porn mag.” I suppose the joke got old, but the woman I married has been kind to me, so she always gave it a smile.)

I know many would use the biblical comment about the lust in the heart as an argument against porn, but I wonder if that works.


We’ll never know the extent and context to which Jesus meant in this regard and we can’t ask him to clarify it.


There was no porn (in our use of the word) in his day. There was only the looking at, and lusting after women who were not married to you (his words in this instance appear to be directed at the male population), or coveting a woman that is another’s, that is breaking an old testament commandment, who were real persons you could see on a regular basis.


But what about imaginitary creations? Plenty of modern porn involves stuff drawn up (for nearly the sole purpose of carnal lustful thoughts). It’s hard to imagine thinking of cartoon women in the same way as having lust in your heart for a real woman.


What about photos of real women who you’ll never meet? Jesus’s world also didn’t have this as a possibility. 99.9% of ancient Roman times meant one SAW a woman and then thought lustfully about her. In RARE circumstances, one could see her image, because she was famous, but that’s not worth a discussion over. Today, porn photos and movies on the internet feature women who you’re having lustful thoughts over, but have no (real) chance of meeting. So lustful thoughts can’t/won’t lead to the same possible wrongness as they might in biblical times.

In Ancient Rome, if you saw your neighbor’s wife, and she saw you, and she saw how you looked at her, and she was bored at home, this may be trouble, and this is the kind of thing Moses’s commandments were concerned about. But looking at a photo of a woman who lives 5,000 miles away, or one who is in your city, but you’ll never meet, and if you did, you wouldn’t know she was the porn star you saw on your computer, - can you really “covet” her, in the Moses sense?


I guess I have a hard time buying into the idea that one can be adulterous in one’s heart with a photograph or J-peg.

See....the way it shouldn't be thought of as justifiable by the fact that those that you stare at on a computer screen weather cartoon, real or altered is still a mind alteration diverted to a sexual drive or willingness to release the desire to indulge in STILL a very sexual immoral act. See even masturbation is a sin, entertaining your mind with thoughts of these things is still wrong.

It's then a basis of selfish ambition to do these things in your mind to these people without them knowing but it's still done in your heart if there is a longing for even just a moment that it flashes that picture behind your eyes it is considered a lust. If you do not fear how disgusting and sexually immoral our minds truly are then where is the purity in entertaining these thoughts? and for what other reason are these being thought or entertained in our minds but to trigger a physical effect?
I wish I could be free from this in all honesty but it not only emasculates and causes a socially awkward men if they continually do this. (Which I was :S) It causes alot of depression, anxiety, confusion, self condemnation and complete and utter misunderstanding for how to have a proper relationship when the time comes.

I struggled for a long time with how I disliked myself because of this demeaning act of sexual immorality and emasculating opaque faulty belief system that was developed over a number of years doing the same thing over and over and over again. However things have changed since Christ has saved me from this, again I do struggle with this same problem from time to time but reversing the effect of this problem is a challenge that only God could truly conquer because I realize when we can give up before temptation gets to us to conceive sin Christ can take control and change this completely.

I would dislike myself if I was looking at another women the same way I'd look at my wife which might be the case (If or when I do have a wife of my own) I would pray a lot that my wife would understand this and I would push to encourage her that no other could be in her spot within my heart because to me she would be the only one the ONLY one that I would think of that way, she would be my standard of beauty and sexual appeal Praise God for his Mercy to allow this to be done with our wives. ^_^ (Again however I probably know so little of this because I haven't had a relationship with a woman in a few years, nor do I have any intended ideas for marriage in the near future. ^_^; It maybe taken as a grain of salt ^_^

P.S. I do not proclaim to stating that's all my wife would be for me in our marriage. :S I would hope she would be my best friend for life as well as my partner, my helper, and the one that could guard my heart and take me as a living sacrifice.... Porn is one of the deadliest disease that most of us get infected in without knowing that when it gets in, its difficult to untangle yourself from it. It causes family breakages and difficult to sustain a Godly relationship. I wathed it it a clip of it which then set a drive to watch a whole movie and later i found my self choosing varieties without knowing it was morning. It is very very dangerous! I was filled with guilt and lots of dirty thought were all over my mind.

May I add another tool to help those men who are struggling with porn. I'm from Save The Source and we help men and teens stop viewing pornography or being addicted to porn. With 50 to 60% of Christian men viewing porn (with Christian teens it is much higher) something needs to be done because Christ's church is becoming weak. The tool I'm referring to is our Self Help Manual titled, "Empowering Men - To Overcome the Temptation" . You can find it at www.savethesource.org/resources.html . Men and teens can work on this manual in private or with an accountability partner as you suggested. This will definitely help many men and teens be set free. I hope this helps. Thanks

Very interesting, but one has to wonder whether their trouble with porn is the cause or the result of not having a gf.

100% in this boat. I finally broke my addiction to looking at the sites about 2 and half mths ago but now that I have removed that from my life... I have realized that sex and porn is EVERYWHERE. Even in places that I would have never though possible... Its the thing I now wrestle with every day :/ but I remember the reason I gave it up and how much more free time and opportunities I have with out it!

Anyway, I think I've come to the conclustion. It looks like 5 months is as far as I can go without looking right now, but with in a another 5 months I'll have grown stronger as a Christian and because I'll be able to go longer without(With God's help) looking at that crap. Okay so it might not work like that, but I am confident that I'm not gonna go back to looking at it once a week like I used a couple years ago.

not sure why i can see a deep fight and heavenly compassion for EVERYONE who struggles, but when it's me i bury myself alive with shame and condemnation. i just have to speak what i feel. and what i feel is a jealous love and ferocious guardianship over those who fight the good fight.

i know the battle intimately.

So a buddy of mine once told me this (applies to any addiction, not just porn): if you're still counting how long it has been, you're not over it.

Any thoughts on this? It's hard to NOT count though...especially if you're very logic minded. I always want to be like "I'm not counting! But if I was...it has been three years. Three years and two months!" Maybe I'm just cynical though.

i dunno. i tend to count everything. i usually never count past a year on anything. like any life goals or fresh starts. in my calendar i still count. i count bc it helps me fight. i count bc it helps me remember how many days i've already fought. and when i look at a number like 60 days, 90 days.... one moment of fleeting pleasure seems so small compared to that number.

but then again. my personality just happens to be like this obsessive personal record keeper. so. *shrug* how long does it take to be "over it" i'm not sure. i think it's a decision that has to be made continually.

when alcoholics start getting sober in AA, they get a chip for different levels of sobriety. they get one at 24 hours, at 1 month, at 2 months, at 3 months, and then at 1 year, 2 years, etc etc.

when i was free from masturbation before, i didn't count the days. but when it had been a year, 2 years, 3 years, 4 years, 5 years, and 6 years, i took note. it's like a celebration to mark discipline and how 'far' we've come.

i sure felt free all those years. i didn't need to count or think about days or years. but i felt a certain joy when i remembered how long it's been.

that's my thought on the matter of counting. i love to count.

Looks like you and I could be going at it for a bit today......

God is who is in control of your life and WHATEVER is in your life is FINE if God has SHOWED you it to be something that He wants in your life. That goes for ANYTHING, _________ fill in the blank.

So, be VERY careful in your judging above and, your blanket statement on the church is agian dangerous judgment, I think.

God is in control of our life, it is a PERSONAL relationship with Him that matters, judge not others. Let God do the judging. OK, great, you say the church of today is representing 'death traps,' as you put it ( maybe your church is) but you are speaking death to a vehicle (church) that inspires and SAVES so many by saying these 'deathly' things. I pray I say things not meaning meannness, the Lord leads.

God can have ANYTHING in our life positive , it is what we DO with that positive and IF we are with Him in our life then evil will not overcome the good . Again, the Lord leads , follow Him , for your own personal life, follow Him , with prayer, with thanksgiving, supplication, every thing that you can, and, follow Him with all your mind, heart, body, and, soul, .
Sure, porn is not good, I am not saying it is, in any way, shape, or form, but I am saying that God is judge over ALL and porn is included and what He tells us to do in our life IF we are wholeheartedly serving Him is ANYTHING.

I hope this makes sense, God bless you , Tommy4Christ, for giving us your worldly experience of porn having taken apart your life and, PRAISE GOD! , you discovered that that pain was unraveling your life into what I can only guess was abuses that were NOT of God. God is good, total goodness, and, whatever we do, from it, we WILL get His good. God, through scripture, like Romans 12:1,2, can show us just how GOOD life without things that are hurting us and keeping us from Him. So, YES!, I 100% agree, things in our life that negatively have us do BAD things are not good in our life but, ultimately, God knows what it is we NEED. Don't think you have better plans for someone than God.
