When praying you dont need to go into all the details. You can just say something like: Lord you see what I'm going through...
And consider this scripture: Matthew 6:7-86 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

I pour my heart out to God when praying and afterwards feel exhausted, sometimes even emotionally, mentally and physically ill. For example, when I pray and ask God to help me with my the emotional battle I am fighting from domestic violence I went through, my PTSD kicks in and is like reliving the moment all over again. Does anyone else feel like this, is this normal, am I praying wrong? What can I do about it?

I feel the same way many a times. I feel there is a sort of ptsd for some trauma inside me. I avoid using certain words that remind me of it. I feel my body react to some flash of thought and make me feel disgusted. it seems like a battle and when I start praying i think i will feel relaxed afterwards only to find my mind unrelaxed and still filled with painful thoughts.

I know how you feel.
When I had thoughts and serious negative emotions towards those who harmed my brother, my Dad and me, I did several things; none of which were pharmaceutical.
I learned from experience that Philippians 4:6... is absolutely correct.
In a brief nutshell, I applied God's promises to my situation and this verse to my reactions when they'd crop up. Instead of letting it destroy me, I asked God to help me pass the test and my love for Him to grow through it all. He answered my prayers and I believe that He will do the same for any other believer. Instead of reacting in a normal way in the flesh, I allowed Him to use horrible things that happened to us to turn them into blessings.

"Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."

It's taken time and more than one verse, but He has shown kindness, when others have done the worst evils.

I will pray for your healing.

Sometimes our tongue and mind aren't intimating exactly what we want to say or maybe how to say it. But our Father ALWAYS knows what's on our hearts. I find some peace knowing that when I sometimes struggle with prayer. May His face shine upon you!

The most important thing you can do is be completely honest when speaking with Him. While ever you hold back from speaking truth, the devil is pulling you away from God.

Ask the Lord for the gift of tongues. There's a reason it's called our prayer language. It sure helps me. I have put Psalms and other scripture to music which I often sing to the Lord.
I did that, nothing happened as far as I know.

I'm a little late to the party, but maybe this will help someone. Prayer shouldn't be that difficult. You shouldn't be emotionally drained and exhausted. You should feel joyful and uplifted; you've just spent time with the One who loves you and cares for you. Try to forget the past. In your prayers, just think of the good things the heavenly Father has done for you and thank Him. Ask for His guidance and protection over you. Learn to trust Him for He truly does care for you.

Simplify and shorten your prayer. God already knows the situation, just ask Him to help and guide you, to protects you.

As I am now over 40 years in the Lord, I wonder why people pray wrong in the first place??? God does not know your situation. God is not aware of your needs?? (1 Thess 5:18) is the answer to prayer!! The very will of God is found right in this one verse!! An example!! (Acts 16:22-26) Praying is not requesting but rather thankfulness and praise! Now I am not knocking prayer, just the way one prays. By doing this my P.T.S.D. was removed!! And believe me after 2 tours in Vietnam I had plenty of problems!!

We always ask Jesus and the Holy Spirit to pray with us to the Father. See Romans 8
