I understand from the bible, that sex is created by God for our enjoyment/well being in a marriage relationship only. What Iam saying is you have sex as long as you want to but in marriage only.

One of them is the belief by some Christians that the ONLY purpose of sex is to reproduce, and that married couples should only have sex in order to bear children.
In reality sexual organs are only for reproduction. As part of this, sexual urges push people to have sex not really for pleasures but to reproduce. It is the same for the animal world. They don’t marry but nevertheless have sex because their bodies is programmed to do it for reproduction.

Married or not the sexual urges will be there when the time to reproduce come. Those who forbid sex for whatever reasons are often those who will eventually abuse others.

You make everyone sound like animals. Plenty of people have demonstrated self-control when it comes to sex.

This is not my intent !

Cool ! May God bless his children forever !

Unfortunately plenty of people who were highly esteemed for their sanctity committed sexual abuses. However, this is another topic.

Hi there,

Some CC friends and I were talking today about some of the topics we've seen on the forum in the past that have been a bit controversial. One of them is the belief by some Christians that the ONLY purpose of sex is to reproduce, and that married couples should only have sex in order to bear children.

I have always wondered, if this is the case:

1. What happens to couples who marry, then find out they are infertile? (Do they live out the rest of their marriage and just not have sex?)

2. Should couples expect and be required to keep on having children until they no longer can, even if that means they might still be having children in their 50's? (And what if there is a large age gap between spouses? Should the 75-year-old husband continue to have children with his 45-year-old wife if she is still able, even though he will most likely pass away much sooner than she will and leave her to raise them alone?)

3. What does a couple do once they stop having children/get too old to have them? Do they live out the rest of their marriage together but in celibacy?

While this thread has been written for those who believe sex is only for procreation and is not meant to be an actual debate about the purpose of sex, I know this will obviously be brought up, so I'm hoping that we can at least have a civil, respectful conversation about this.

The reason I am asking this question is that I have seen this belief mentioned several times on the forum before, and I have always wondered what people who believe this would dictate situations such as these if people are realistically expected to adhere to that belief.

Thank you for your kind consideration, and I'm looking forward to an informative discussion, even when there are bound to be expressions of vast differences in beliefs.
God said be fruitful and multiple. WE are told in Proverbs to be satisfied with the women ( wife ) of our youth. Paul said husband and wife should come together often. The mentioning of this was in context to sexual relationships not only for children.
The children are the result of sex possibly, not everyone who has sex has children. But they still have sex.

God made it that way and it should be enjoyed in a godly marriage.

I'm sure someone has already quoted this, but the Bible doesn't say that the only reason to get married is for child-bearing-purposes. Yes, that is one reason for marriage, but there is also the matter of getting married because the couple lacks self-control and has a lot of passion:

"But if they cannot exercise self-control, they should marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion." 1 Corinthians 7:9

The inability to exercise self-control and the burning with passion are a direct reference to these peoples' sex drives. Marriage is absolutely ok for no other reason than to relieve the passion associated with a sex drive. So a married couple is permitted to do this together according to the Bible.

I would say it can also be a matter of conscience, too, for example, if someone is very conservative and traditional. So for me there wouldn't be any issues with taking this verse in stride, guilt-free, if married.
