I must have missed that day in History class, what war stopped because the soldiers refused to fight?
Soldiers who refused to fight, deserted, or showed cowardice in WWI were executed by their own armies, with thousands killed by firing squads. While estimates vary, Austria-Hungary executed the most (roughly 430), followed by Italy (391) and Britain (306), though Germany executed very few for these specific crimes.
Yeah you did miss that class. The Vietnam war ended primarily because of refusal to participate, including soldiers in Vietnam. In Vietnam it was the COs who were getting fragged (eg, grenade under their cots while sleeping, killed while on missions, etc) and infantry being sent off on missions refused to engage the VC. Wars stop when soldiers refuse to fight.
