Our present United States of America has been under 3 different Laws in under 230 years. 1) the first “law” was the law of England. 2) then, after we won our freedom, we were under The Laws of Confederation, 3) Now, we are ruled by The Constitution of the United States of America—in under 230 years.
It’s not hard to see how God has changed His “laws” in the THOUSANDS of years man has been in existence.

In the Bible, there also are 3 different “laws” that are portrayed as being in effect at different times. In the beginning ( Genesis), early mankind did not have a “written law.” We see God communicating to people directly from heaven. Sometimes in dreams, sometimes in visions, sometimes speaking from heaven. Historians sometimes call this the “Patriarchal Law”— when God spoke directly to the “fathers”. Patriarch” means “father.” God chose a man named Abraham through whom He would bring a chosen nation of people and the Christ into the world. After the book of Genesis, in Exodus, we see God giving a written “law” to his people, the Jews, when they come out of Egypt. This covenant between God and the Jews was ONLY for the Jews. It was not for gentiles. God did not make a covenant with Gentiles. Deut. 5:3. This covenant with the Jews lasted 1500 years and was a “written” law. This was and is the Old Testament law. It was a law of “works.” There were many, many sacrifices to be offered; holy days to be kept; feast days, festivals, offerings, new moons, laws about foods, At this time Israel was a NATION of people. This Old Testament law contained laws for CIVIL government as well as their RELIGIOUS laws. So you have laws for different offenses and crimes along with what punishments went with each crime. The Old Testament books of Exodus, Leviticus, numbers and Deuteronomy are called “the books of the law.” Read those and you will get a good understanding of what the “ Old” law was about.

However, even in the Old Testament, God spoke through Jeremiah the prophet and said, that ONE DAY, He would MAKE A NEW COVENANT with His people, NOT LIKE that first covenant He made with them when He brought them out of Egypt.

This “Old Testament law” was still in effect and governed the Jews in the first four books of the New Testament. Jesus lived under this law and kept it perfectly. Jesus had been circumcised the 8th day, according to the “law”; He kept the “Passover”; the rich young ruler came to Him asking about the “law” and Jesus told him to keep the commandments found in this law. God wants every one of His followers to obey whatever law they are living under. We are not to be “lawbreakers.” Romans 13:1. Jesus often contended with the Jewish leaders—Pharisees, Sadducee's, and priests —about this law because they distorted it adding their own interpretations and traditions.

Here is what religious people today do not understand. THIS LAW CAME TO AN END. It is not in force or in effect today. Even the Jews today are no longer required to keep that old law. And certainly NOT GENTILES!! If it was not for gentiles in the Bible and gentiles did not keep it then—then it is not for gentiles today and gentiles today are not required to keep it.

Jesus said He did not come to destroy the old law but to FULFILL it, and fulfill it He did. He says NOT ONE WORD would PASS AWAY UNTILL….until what? UNTIL ALL IS FULFILLED. Matthew 5:17-18. Jesus fulfilled EVERY prophesy about Him that the Old Testament ever made. Someone said that there were more than 30 prophesies about Christ in the Old Testament. He FULFILLED THEM ALL! When Jesus died on the cross, Some of His final words were, “It is finished.” What was finished? I can think of several things: His WORK here on earth that the Father gave Him to do, was finished. The fulfilling of every prophesy about him was finished. The Old Testament law was finished. It was fulfilled. The theme of the Old Testament was “A MESSIAH IS COMING!” The purpose of a “chosen” people was to bring the Messiah into the world. Jesus came; Jesus fulfilled; Jesus offered the last, supreme sacrifice. Jesus died. It is finished. All is fulfilled; the will of God is complete; the work is done.

Here is what the NEW TESTAMENT says about the old law:
Colossians 2:14, “…having WIPED OUT the handwriting of requirements ( old law) which was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has TAKEN IT OUT OF THE WAY nailing it to His cross.”

Hebrews 9:16-17, “ For where there is a TESTAMENT, there must also be the DEATH OF THE TESTAOR. For a testament ( or will) is in force AFTER MEN ARE DEAD. Since it has noPOWER at all while the testator LIVES.” The Old law of the Jews ended, that Old Testament law given by Moses on Mt. Sinai, ENDED when Jesus died on the cross. He took it out of the way, nailing it to His cross.

The death of the testator—Jesus, brought into force His “ NEW” covenant, the law of Christ, the law of “FAITH”, without the “works” of the old law. That Old Testament law.

God has not changed His laws. never. Hebrews 13:8- "Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today & forever"!

I’ll let the Holy Spirit do the talking for me.

HEBREWS 7:12
“For the priesthood being changed, of necessity, THERE IS ALSO A CHANGE OF THE LAW.”

This is the argument the Spirit is making: Under the OLD LAW of Israel, a man could NOT be a priest unless he was from the tribe of Levi. But Jesus IS a High priest FOREVER, according to Hebrews 6:20. So, how can Jesus who is NOT from the tribe of Levi, be a High Priest? Simple, the law was changed. The Old Testament is no longer governing us. We are under the law of Christ in the NEW Testament. Under the NEW law, Jesus who is from the tribe of Judah can be and IS our High Priest.

Hmm.... as I read Scripture, I see that those who choose to live by the Law (even today) shall be judged by the Law. Meaning they must surely keep the Laws of the Old Testament. The only one that I am aware of that has passed is blood sacrifice.

James, Chapter 2 is one place this is spoken of.
Galatians, Chapter 3 speaks of those who live under the Law must obey the Law. It also establishes the "new Law" of the New Covenant: The Law of Faith.

Have you read ALL of Galatians?

Have you read ALL of the book of Galatians? For example 2:16, “ Knowing that a man is NOT justified by the works of the law, ( Old Testament) but by faith in Jesus Christ.Even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ. and NOT BY THE WORKS OF THE LAW, for by the works of the law NO FLESH SHALL BE JUSTIFIED.”
OR
3;11, “But that NO ONE IS JUSTIFIED BY THE LAW in the sight of God is evident, for the just shall live by faith” and the law is NOT OF FAITH ( verse 12)

3:24, “The law was our tutor to bring us to Christ that we might be justified by faith, but after faith has come ( Christ), WE ARE NO LONGER UNDER A TUTOR.” If the Old Testament law was a “tutor” and we are NO LONGER UNDER a tutor, then that is saying that we are NO LONGER UNDER the Old Testament law.

Paul agues that we are children of the “ free woman” represents Christ and His New Law. The Old law is represented by Hagar, the “bond woman” in chapter 4.:31-“we are NOT children of the bond woman but of the free.” We are not children of the Old law but of the New law of Christ.

5:1, “Stand fast in the Liberty (New law) by which Christ has made us FREE and do not become entangled again with a yolk of bondage (old law)”. The old law is portrayed as a HEAVY YOKE because of its many, many, animal sacrifices and holy days , festivals, feasts, new moons, etc. He says in 3:10, “You observe days, and months, and seasons, and years, (old Jewish law) I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed labor on you IN VAIN. In verse 9 he says, after you have known God ( freedom) how is it that you turn back to the weak and beggerly elements …to be in BONDAGE? Finally, he just tells them OUTRIGHT, “You who attempt to be justified by the ( Old) law, YOU HAVE FALLEN FROM GRACE!”” 5:4. It doesn’t get any plainer than that.

I don’t know which verse you are referring to in chapter 3, but Paul did say that if you are going to be circumcised, because you are following that old law, then you are a debtor ( Obligated) to keep the WHOLE law. 5:3. That means you can’t just keep the parts of the law that you WANT to keep, like people today do—tithing and the sabbath day—if you try to keep PART of it, you MUST KEEP ALL OF IT; that includes animal sacrifices, feasts, offerings etc. the whole thing!!

I believe it is evident in the book of Galatians that Paul does not want anyone to keep the Old Testament law. He is encouraging people to obey Christ and His new law of faith which FREES us from that old law of bondage.

it may be that all the laws were already in place & that at different times, God would enact a new one.

Agreed, Jesus did what was obviously needed to be done. And he did it
Then we see in Acts, Peter had three dreams of unclean animals, in those three dreams he was told, Peter kill and eat! Peter replied, he can not kill or eat anything unclean!
Amazing, Then God said to Peter, "Do not call anything unclean", that God has cleansed (Has Jesus won for us y'all or not, you decide thanks?)
then Peter went to the Gentiles house, where it was illegal by the Jewish religion. to enter a Gentile house, and he entered there anyways, called. by God to do it. And the Gentiles saved by belief first, God did it through Peter, wow, woe is me, anyone else see Isaiah 6:1-7 Salvation from God is a gift, not of work(s), if is then man has a reason to boast, does man/woman not?
Paul in Romans 14 states "I" "know and am convinced by Jesus the risen one, all things are clean of itself". Can we the people accept this?
I see, since all things are clean of itself, that leaves me with what to do with anything, another claims as unclean to them or not! To not condemn them or use my freedom to make them angered, me doing my freedom in front of them, Re-read Romans 14:1-4, trust God for each of us to grow up into maturity and get off the milk please as God permits not me. Hebrews 5:12-6:3
Yo, do not accuse, not abuse not manipulate anyone, no taking away anyone else's free will, just love all as God does love us all, who has not taken away free will from anyone, I see this truth now, not always saw it, now do, thank you Father and Son as Won (One)

God does not stop mercy and love to us all, Will teach us each in each and every mistake we all make and even those anyone continues in, nothing can separate this love of God from anyone ever, at least me thank you, thanking God Psalm 100:4, 103:12
This love and mercy is beyond measure to fathom, unless one hears truth over error from Father himself in them, these new kids see and stand in trust, no need to figure anything out anymore, at least this I see this now in thanksgiving and praise to Father and Son as Won (One)
How can anyone get anyone else to love them, without taking away anyone's free will to choose? God has done that for us all y'all, me at least. love overcame evil and overcomes evil presently in reality forever for me at least and all who see it in belief to God, no matter what troubles happen to them. I see to not deny God, especially going through any and all troubles here on earth first.
Thank you Beckworth

Christians need to be careful about saying God changes laws because the Bible teaches that God is immutable, never changing. i don't know the whole story on this. all i'm saying is that i don't think God changes His mind & then changes a law. i never studied into this subject. but this is the 1st time i heard someone say that God changes laws. if you find out the truth on this, please let me know.

Generally, I agree, but much of the Law stipulated rules for Levites, priests, and the people’s interactions with them… far more than just sacrifices. All of this is obsolete.

Please note the distinction between God and His laws. If you conflate them, you must explain why “God changed” to require the Levitical priesthood when it did not exist prior to Aaron.

It is not that God changes Law(s) it has been since day one in the fall of Adam and Eve. Mercy in love from God to them, and has continued forward ever since

God saw all as good on day six, rested on day seven for us to rest too, being given new God's love of 1 Cor 13:4-7 imputed in us the believers, that will not quit or deny God ever. Will this be you now too, I trust Father to reveal it to you to, thank you

God's love and mercy from day 1 has never changed, people have in misinterpreting, thanks

I understand how strange this must sound if you have never studied it before. I wiil just state up front what I believe the Bible teaches and I will give you scripture for EVERYTHING to show WHY I believe that there was an Old law for the Jews in the Old Testament and it lasted until Jesus died on the cross. The New Testament is called the “Last will and Testament” of Jesus Christ. And just as today, if a man has a “will”, that will is not in force until he dies. After his death, his will comes into effect. This is exactly what Hebrews 9:16-17 says. And that is what happened when Jesus died on the cross. His “NEW” Will came into effect—the New Testament. It is called the law of Christ or law of faith. Romans 3:27. The Old Testament law of the Jews was “exclusive”—for Jews ONLY. The New Testament law is “INCLUSIVE””—for EVERYONE, Jews AND gentiles alike.

The old law is often called the law of works” because of all of the animal sacrifices, , offerings, and many, many requirements of holy days, feast days, festivals, sabbath days and many more such things. The book of Galatians talks extensively about the “works” of the law. When you read those words, you need to read above the verse and below the verse, sometimes the whole chapter, to get the “context, that explains what kind of works he is talking about. Don’t assume! Know what the writer is meaning. Did you read the “thread”?
Start with Deuteronomy 5. This is where Moses recounts the story of how God made a “covenant” (agreement-law) with His people, the Jews when they came out of Egypt. (Exodus20). He lists the 10 commandments as part of that law, but it was much more than just the 10 commandments. The books of Exodus, Leviticus, numbers, and Deuteronomy contain the Old Testament law that God made with the Jews. You can read it in those books. That Old Testament law lasted 1500 years. But even in the Old Testament, the prophet Jeremiah prophesied that ONE DAY, God would make a NEW covenant (law) with His people—NOT LIKE THE FIRST COVENANT He made with them after they came out of Egypt.
Jeremiah 31:31 “Behold, the days are coming says the Lord when I will make a NEW COVENANT with the house of Israel…”. God never intended for the Old law to be permanent.
If you will read Hebrews 8 in the New testament, you will read that same prophesy of Jeremiah quoted to show that the New Testament is the covenant that Jeremiah’prophesied would come. His prophesy was fulfilled in the New Testament. These are 2 different laws —both from God; they fulfilled the purpose for which they were created.

Galatians 4:24 Paul says that the purpose of the Old Testament law was to BRING US TO Christ. He calls it a “tutor.” But after Christ had come, we no longer were under the “tutor”?or old law.

Galatians 4:24 tells us there are TWO COVENANTS—one was the OLD TESTAMENT LAW that was delivered by Moses on Mt. Sinai and the other was the NEW TESTAMENT LAW OF CHRIST, also called the law of faith. Romans 3:27. Almost the entire book of Galatians is contrasting these two laws. Also, the book of Hebrews says such things as, beginning in Hebrews 7, God has “annulled” the former commandments. Verse 18, and has brought in a BETTER COVENANT ( hope) verses 19 & 22.. Chapter 8, verse 7, He talks about the “FIRST COVENANT ( Old Testament) and the “SECOND” covenant ( New Testament) and THEN, He quotes Jeremiah 31:31 showing that this “ New” covenant is a fulfillment of that prophecy. Verse 13 is very important. “ A New Covenant, He has made the first ( covenant) OBSOLETE, now what is becoming obsolete and growing “old” is ready to VANISH AWAY!”

I tried to further explain in what I wrote in the thread and post # 8. I hope you will study and meditate on the scriptures .

I hope you will study and meditate on the scriptures .
i am familiar with some of the above verses. maybe the word
"fulfilled" should be used instead of "change". as in God replacing the o.t. with the new n.t. at 1 point, Jesus says, "i have not come to abolish the law them but to fulfill them". changes that seem to appear thru history related by humans can be an understanding on how we relate to God. thanks for the detailed explanation.

I agree with your dividing or interpretation of Paul, but I would clarify that he does not want people
to think they are saved by obeying innumerable moral dictates but rather via faith in Christ that is credited as righteousness (Romans 3:21-5:1) and allows His Holy Spirit to love through them (Rom. 5:5, Gal. 5:22-23) as they grow toward moral maturity (Eph. 4:11-24).

God has not changed His laws. never. Hebrews 13:8- "Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today & forever"!

That says God does not change. it doesn't say the law doesn't change.

zB - -

  • Adam ate only vegetables and fruits.
  • after the flood Noah ate every kind of meat.
  • under Moses many meats were forbidden.
  • with the advent of Christ all food is clean when received with gratefulness.

Nor does it say that there are not two types of laws:
1. the Mosaic sacrificial system that foreshadowed and was fulfilled by Christ's atonement, and
2. Messiah's moral law of love that is eternal truth.
