I need the help of a Christian community on the topic of rollerblading. I've been trying to talk my mom into letting my skate again but she is fighting me on the issue because she hates it. I'm 27 years old and I recently have moved back in with my parents. My parents have my skates somewhere around the house but I don't know where they are. When I was 16 years old I used to go to the local skatepark. From there I met some other rollerbladers and made friends with them. It was that year when I went to the home of one of those people and was accidentally shot in the eye with a bb gun and I lost my vision in one of my eyes. I forgave the person that did this to me and we continued to be friends. After I healed I would hang out with this person and when we didn't rollerblade sometimes we would drink together. Ever since then my mom has hated the thought of me rollerblading. I believe the trauma that happened to me along with "the partying" has caused my mom to focus on rollerblading as the main reason for not being a godly person. I have tried to tell her that rollerbladers are not all party type of people. She believes that all rollerbladers are party animals. I told her that I met a Christian girl who rollerblades and goes to the skatepark and she wants to have a skate date with me, I met her on Facebook. My mom says how could she be a Christian and rollerblade? I have tried to tell my mom that rollerblading has been that constant in my life that has helped me not only physically with keeping my body in shape, but it has mentally been a blessing for me. It's my anti-drug. It treats my depression. In the past when I've been sad or angry, I would skate and it would be the best therapy for me. Wearing a helmet and pads are not an issue for me, I am pro helmet and pads. I have explained to my mom that I want to make a ministry out of my gift for skating. I want to go to the skate park, wear Christian T-shirts that are for witnessing, and just silently skate while everyone would know that I'm Christian. She still doesn't want anything to do with it. I told her that people who party are everywhere and in every sort of place in life. They're at the workplace, they're in college, they're even in the church. This is has been causing me a lot of mixed emotions lately. It's gotten me even more depressed. I feel controlled. I don't have anything else other than my gift for music. But I'm bored of music because I have a lower end guitar with broken strings and it's hard to hear myself without a microphone. But I'm more of a music producer and I used to have a laptop to make music electronically, I'm more of a DJ type of musician. I have been nothing but obedient to my parents, not drinking or doing anything that they don't like, even though I'm 27. If I could get as many replies to this thread as possible with your feedback on why you think rollerblading is a positive thing for me in my life please write your thoughts down. Thank you.

Oh you finally came online i was waiting for you:) God wants us to enjoy life as well as be obedient to him, He gave you the desire to like rollerblading as he built you from the tiniest detail. we are to enjoy life and and enjoy it in abundance as long as we continue to live for him and have him as out number one.

There nothing wrong with rollerblading or having fun because its good fun and healthy for you.

Uhmm, yeahhh you're 27, dude.. Plenty old enough to make your own choices without needing the ok from your folks!! I would say if you enjoy it, then do it..

i once wrote a short letter to my parents when i was living with them when i was 25 or 26 saying that i would not rollerblade any more to "honor my parents"... i got confused as to what honoring my parents meant. i thought because they hated my skating that it would be me honoring them by giving it up with a signed and dated piece of paper. my mom recently pulled that out and had me look at it. keep in mind i'm her only child. she has always been overprotetive of me

Of course rollerblading is good for you. Good exercise, etc. Maybe you could ask your mother to release you from the promise you made since you are not the same person you were back then. Invite her to come with you? Even just to watch?

At the very least, be honest with your feelings to her. Tell her that you need to be able to make decisions about your life at this age. Tell her that she has done a good job of instilling good values in your life, and she can now trust you to act on them.
Ask her to pray about what you say and to continue the conversation at a later time.

Its time...

I used to rollerblade. I was quite good at it too. And for the record, if you ever try ice skating the rollerblading skill transfers 1-to-1 to ice skating... except with less weight on your feet when you ice skate. Why did I quit? Because I became more interested in travel than style, and rollerblading doesn't get you anywhere nearly as fast as a good ole bicycle.

But to the topic at hand. Basically what blue_ladybug said - you're 27 man, if you want to go blading go blading.

You probably feel controlled because you are being controlled. You're 27, a grown man and you're mom won't let you go rollerblading??

Seriously, go get your skates and stop all this nonesense.

I would break several body parts if I ever roller-bladed! Simply because I don't know how to, and I'm wayyy too uncoordinated..lol :) I have enough trouble walking..forget rolling!!

I dunno, if you start slow enough... When I got my first pair of rollerblades I was very cautious. I kept at it, but I never took any chances, and I taught myself how to skate, and I didn't have a single fall in the first six months. That's right not a single fall.

No way at 27 would I let my parents tell me what to do. I would listen to advice, but would not let them control me like that. I say rollerblade anyway, and if it gets too bad get your own place.
