Should an adult be made to do chores?

Do you think that once someone turns 18 in America, that the parents should make them do chores? Or another question should they be spanked for doing something against the house rules.

As far as an 18 year old doing chores, I feel that if they are living at home they should be contributing to housework and if you want to call that chores then it's fine. If you are living in someone's house then it would be respectful to do the chores they ask you to do.

I'm not sure spanking an 18 year old for not doing chores or going against house rules is an effective method of punishment/correction. Though I can't say I have ever heard of this happening to someone, so I couldn't be sure. It seems rather silly to me. I'm thinking it would just be best to have other consequences such as more work or even moving out.

I think that once 18, the adult kids should offer to help out with the chores on their own (the times when they don't have plans/job/homework).

Or another question should they be spanked for doing something against the house rules.

since 18 your consider an adult however dont want to do chores, legally the parents can make him/her leave. cant live by the rules than make your own by living on your own. and no 18 yr old should be spanked

If you are living under your parents house, no matter what, you should be living by their rules. It's called respect. And no adults should not be made, they should be willing to do. However, much easier said then done. (Was guilty of not doing chores in timely manner, or ignoring chores, quiet frequently.)

As for punishment, I think in the older days, parents sometimes still punished adult children living in their house. Or at least threaten to do so. I know someone once told me that at times their mom use to say, "Just because your an adult and bigger than me, don't mean I won't put you over my knee." As for now, I think their are other effective measures of disciplining an adult child, such as refusing to assist a child in finances for a car, or college.

As 18 many kids love to boast of their 'adulthood' and want to be treated like an adult. Well, guess what, adults do chores. Becoming an adult doesn't mean less responsabilities, it means more. At 18 you should know whats expected of you and just do it. Your parents are adults and they do chores, why should you be different? You live there, you make messes, dirty dishes, use electricity, water, create garbage.. shouldn't you do your part to maintain the house?

yes! when i was 18 calling myself wanting to party all the time, coming home late my mom said, hey if you can party all night and come home at 3am you can pay rent! so ya i was paying rent. Now i thanx my mom for it because she taught me about responsibility, if she didnt i probably would be still a party girl and not knowing the real meaning of respect

I can't imagine why an adult living at home wouldn't want to help out with household responsibilities, unless, of course, that adult was willing to pay rent and for other domestic services performed by the parents that benefited him or her as well.

I'm throwing my hat in here. Simply because i kind of have an odd parent/child relationship. Always have. I see it as more of a business relationship if you will. Anyhow when i was living at home i never had assigned chores. I never really "done" chores in the traditional sense. I'm one who hates cleaning in the house so my parents ever since i was 10 told me if you enjoy yard work and being outside then do that, also we never had assigned chores growing up. It was a very free reign household. Basically for me i just payed attention to when the yard needed mowed, trees needed trimmed, cars needed maintenance and done them as needed. So yeah i think an adult should be made to do chores but not forced to like a kid. Instead more like how i am if it needs done i do it. Or atleast make mention to my mom hey i noticed this needs done but we don't have x,y,z to do it can i get what we need. So i think they should help around the house.

Actually, It's a lot less rare to see Americans spank now days. There are some who still do. And I think it's fine, as long as it's done within certain boundaries. However, the ones I hear the most of that spank are the ones from England. Interesting, how it's always someone from another country.
